secret internet access

#1

Post by kd0bwk »

I have been called as ward clerk recently and have been approached many times already for a password to access the wireless internet in our ward building....as many callings have been changed recently everyone has either forgotten the password or thinks that it was specifically for their use only.

is there way for me to access this info from the clerks computer at the ward building or wait for our computer guy

The local policy for access is controlled by the stake president and implemented by the stake technology specialist. Some stake presidents delegate some of that responsibility to bishops.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

and there lies my problem as the above named callings have all changed at some point in the last year for the stake as well as most of our ward and our ward members who know this information do not want to give it up

In that case might I suggest that you ask the new STS, to contact the GCS for this information!

Regardless of how the MH connects to the internet (cisco or dsl modem) the STS (even if newly called) should now the user/pwd combination for all access points. He should be able to "reset" a dsl modem or call GCS for the cisco information. If the Stake President is new and does not have a policy implemented you might want to start the ball rolling with the STS (as it is his responsibility) in terms of having the Stake determining what they want to do with the user/pwd combination.

As a clerk, I turn all of these requests for passwords (to the church wireless network) over to the STS. He/she is the one responsible for only giving out the password to those that have a justifiable need to access the internet during the block of meetings or week auxiliary meetings (although I know of some who might like to check their email, facebook, or sports scores during a meeting (hopefully not sacrament)).

Our stake is now hard-wired to all clerk's office computers; but we still have wireless for those that need to access familysearch.org, mormon.org, or lds.org with their multitude of sites that provide church talks, training sessions, spiritual videos, and access to CDOL.

The access to the church bldg's wireless network could be as hard to get as getting a recommend and changed periodically to ensure only authorized members have access to the internet. Although I know that the "secret" password is shared more widely (my wife has it) and some people stay in contact with children, siblings, and grandchildren - even during church meetings (it is far-less disruptive than a cellphone voice call). All-in-all it's up to the stake president and STS, who I'm sure want to trust their members to manage their priorities in an appropriate and inspired manner.

youth and wireless password

#8

Post by dbm42 »

Shortly after installing a CISCO 881 and several access points in one of our chapels, it was discovered by the Bishop that all of the youth had the wireless password. They were logging on to such an extent that the system was bogging down so much that legitimate users were complaining of the slowness. Support indicated that they could make changes to allow for more "ports" to increase the speed. In the end, the Bishop had a Sacrament Meeting "chat" about wireless usage on Sunday! It must have solved the problem as I've heard nothing more.

Also, most all buildings keep the default wireless password that comes with the Cisco. Due to me calling, I have the password and I have noticed that only one building I have been to in the past year has changed it, and that includes buildings across the US from GA, Nevada, & Utah...

I personally feel this is an extremely limited viewpoint regarding the direction of the church. Why is the church putting in networks to ALL buildings in the world, including internet access and wireless throughout the building? Is it for limited access to the Internet? No, it is for that and so much more. Video conferencing, webcasts, Gospel Instruction and Leadership Training... viewing streaming content online, accessing the Notes and Journal app with devices syncing with the Church's own designed cloud-based software offering (Notes and Journal) and I suspect more and more will move in that direction.

Instead of finding ways to limit members use of the Internet, we should be finding new and innovative ways to teach the current and rising generations. We should be using the media produced by the church. Just like in the Enterprise (large offices with thousands of employees) Consumerization of the marketplace is driving innovation and revolutionizing how we learn and develop. Consumerization is also affecting us as members of the church, I find great comfort that the Brethren are inspired to lead us in this direction. Why are we fighting this transformation? We should embrace and evangelize it.
