Assigning Unassigned Deacons, Teachers, Priests to Companionships

#1

Post by matthewryanphillips »

I am the EQ secretary in my ward. I have been asked to make changes that would include adding some young men to be companions with members of the Elders Quorum. However, anyone that is a Deacon, Teacher, or Priest, is unable for me to pull up to assign them to a companionship. However, if there is anyone from those quorums that have already been in a companionship before, I can move them to another companionship. It is just with those unassigned brethren outside of the Elders Quorum that I am unable to assign to a current or new companionship.

Deacons cannot be assigned to Minister. Only Teachers and Priests.

I'm not sure of the interface used. There are times when things do not appear in a drop-down list that can be added if you start typing their names.

I'm not sure what to tell you. All of the unassigned teachers and priests show up as available to assign both when editing an existing companionship and when adding a new one. They show up both when the All filter is used as well as the Unassigned filter. Of course, I'm a ward clerk. I suppose it might take a ward level calling to assign new young men but that seems strange and the Access Table doesn't have any separate right for assigning youth. But you could ask the ward clerk if he can do it.

It's possible that assigning youth to minister is limited. The Handbook seems to place additional conditions on youth ministers. For example, "When youth are assigned to a companion who is not a parent, leaders should confirm that parents do not object to the assignment."

Can you assign a youth to a parent companion?

Ok, so looking at it deeper, the individual that I was asked to assign to his father is still a deacon. I do have the ability to assign unassigned teachers and priests. Handbook 2 for the no deacon ministering?

Handbook 2 : 8.4. The language doesn't prohibit as much as it fails to include. But it's consistent with the duties listed in 8.1.1
Particularly if you contrast the role of a deacon with a teacher.

I found that as well, and it linked with 7.4. So just need to find out if he hasn't been updated in the Membership info to Teacher, or if an oversight was made. Thanks for the help. Looks like all my issues are just related to correct information in member's information.

Handbook 1 16.1.10 may come into play. That describes the procedure when an ordance hasn't been recorded.

Perhaps. But if the ordination was recent and was attended by the bishop or one of the current councilors then there isn't any need to go through that procedure. It can be handled like any other ordination that is recorded soon after the ordination.

Hence the qualifier "may". ;) It really depends on how much time has passed and people's memories.
