My stake president has asked me to download all the videos and create a DVD. That is the best solution for our stake in general, given our older TVs (which all have DVD players) and a significant number of teachers who lack the technological expertise for any of the other options.

So if there's going to be an ISO image available before the first of the year, I'd really like to know, as it will save me many hours of work.

ksolsen wrote:What about this idea: if we created a centralized website with all youth curriculum videos (which we are actually doing), and made it easy to download the entire year's worth of videos for one group (YM, YW, or Sunday School) in one .zip file, could we have the STS create a pile of USB drives that can be made available in the materials center?

We have nothing in the media center that will play USB anything. "State of the art" around here is at best a DVD player and an old television. Anything we do will have to be compatible with that for now.

It we can get from the zip to a DVD, that will work. We do not mind burning the DVD, but it would be easier if the Church could assemble everything to make that possible.

We fully support a centralized website with all the videos for easy download. In a few years, we may get to the point where we will download what we need on a per-video basis. And for the moment, we will at least know from whence to snag them.

If the stake does have the funds they are pulling to much funds from the ward budget allowances.

My understanding is that the new curriculum is more geared towards stimulating discussions with in the class room. The media is just one way of helping stimulate the discussion.

Roku has four models, the first three are all under $80 and that last one is list-priced at about that. The most expensive model ($99) has extra features that won't be used in a meetinghouse such as games. Walmarts are the cheapest places to get Rokus at.

The most expensive one, roku 2sx is the only one with USB, which is the recommended way to play videos (download first, before class) and the only model lds.org shows as approved.

It also is the model with the Ethernet (Internet cable) port if you use roku for your live broadcast viewing (conference, etc...) if you have Ethernet at the podium.

What software are you using to create the dvd? (convert the MP4's to the old VOB format)

Actually, I'm just doing the downloading. We have an assistant stake clerk whose profession is video editing who will actually create the DVDs. He has some fancy software on a Mac that he uses; I don't know the name of the software.

Has anyone considered a "Come Follow Me" app for tablet that will allow a teacher to stream (at home) to decide whether they want to show it, then download the clip if desired, and then show (from local tablet storage) the clip during class? Would function similar to the new Podcasts app on iOS, you can either stream or download.

While I realize not everyone will have a tablet, I'm seeing more and more people in my ward carrying them around. I would say we are a fairly "median income" ward, and I'm seeing LOTS of iPads at church. Also, with lower-cost android tablets, we're going to start seeing even more after this Christmas holiday. I know several families who are buying tablets for all their children this holiday season.
