What is involved in getting an MRN?

You have to be a member of the church to be assigned a MRN. For practical purposes, that would be a baptized member of the church.

If you are a member, you can get your MRN from the ward clerk.

MRN stands for "membership record number," if it's helpful – so every membership record has a number associated with it.

When I post my MRN to my account it tells me that my MRN uis already linked to an account or that my birthdate is wrong.

Go to https://ldsaccount.lds.org/recovery?type=username and choose the option to recover your username using your membership record number.
