Attaching marriage source records

#1

Post by drepouille »

I submitted this feedback on FamilySearch Family Tree, but thought it might be useful here as well.

When I attach a marriage record to people in Family Tree, I can only to one "side" of the family at a time. For example, I attach the bride and her two parents first. In order to attach the groom and his two parents, I must open new Person windows and new Source Linker windows to change the focus to the groom. Only then may I attach the others.

I would love to have an easier way to attach the marriage record to all six of these individuals in a single Source Linker screen. Failing that, I would love to have an easier way to change the focus of the Source Linker window, rather than having to open new windows.

You can attach to all the people in the original Source Linker window. All you have to do is to change the focus person on the left side (the record side) first. I do this all the time.

That is absolutely true if you reached the Source Linker window as a result of a search. However, if you got there by following a Hint, there is no easy way to change the focus person of the Source Linker window. You may click on Record or Image at the top left, but that does not allow you to change the focus person. There is no Return to Record button on the bottom left, only a Return to Family Tree button. To change the focus person, you must somehow re-open the source record and select a new focus person.

It doesn't matter how you got to the Source Linker window. You can easily change the focus person no matter how you got there.

Clicking on the Record or Image is not the way to change the focus person. The way to change the focus person is to click on the Change dropdown on the left side (just to the right of the "Person of Record and Spouse").

Here's an illustration using a record I just linked tonight, starting from a record hint.

Here's what I saw first, which lets me attach the source to the the bride's side of the family (the hint I followed happened to be for the bride):

From that first view I can attach the source to the groom as well. But when I want to link the groom's parents, I have to change the person of focus. I do that by clicking on the left-hand "Change" dropdown as follows:

Once I've done that, I can see the groom's parents and easily attach them from the view that then appears:

I've done this so many times with 100% success that I really don't think there is any problem, unless you're trying to change the person of focus some other way than how I have described.

Sometimes we are blind to those things that are directly between our eyes.
Thank you, Alan
