New Adult Curriculum / Meetinghouse Capabilities

#1

Post by t0008sa »

With the recent announcement that adult curriculum / teaching methodology will be changing (aligning with the new, current youth curriculum / teaching methodology), I believe that the ideal situation would be to have much higher meetinghouse bandwidth and internet-capable TV screens in all classrooms.

Too many classes now have students huddled around the teacher's laptop/tablet/smartphone...

Does anyone know if there's a plan to have the physical facilities upgraded to support the new teaching methodology?

Good luck with that. I have two buildings in my stake that are already maxed out with a meager connection. Streaming is to too dicey. There's no guarantee that the church servers will be able to support the Sunday load.

So the advice to download ahead of time is still the best way to go.

The counsel has always been to download the media ahead of time and to not rely on the ability to stream the media on Sunday. Even if your local bandwidth is adequate the servers hosting the media may not be able to support the number of requests on a Sunday.

It is really not cost effective to build out an infrastructure to handle maximum demand for six or eight hours one day a week.

I have been teaching the Aaronic Priesthood "Come, Follow Me" lessons with the media on a flash drive for over a year. Each quarter I download the material for that quarter and it is always available.

I'd rather have the FM group invest in more smart TV monitors and just teach people how to download the files to flash drives (or, in my ward, have the files pre-loaded to flash drives by, well, me). If more teachers are planning to use this media then we'll need more equipment to play the stuff.

That is why our FM bought a WD TV Media Player for each meetinghouse.

The way I am going about this, is to find ways to wireless display from various devices that do not need the Wi-Fi of the building that is sent to a receiver that then shows it on a larger display device like TV (does not need a "smart TV" and projectors. The presenter would down the video on their particular device. On newer Windows devices and Android I can use a technology called Miracast to achieve this goal. Apple products appear to need wifi to use AirPlay for video/screen mirroring. I do not want to have an "adapter center" at each building.

I have been researching many options of compact Windows 10 home devices that have HDMI and VGA with a companion audio jack and hopefully A/V to RCA connection. It will have a few USB ports, so most Win10 sticks are out. I am trying to put Windows 10 in a Kiosk mode. I think I am close to a few possible solutions. For the wireless receivers I am targeting a price of $15 to about $ 100. For mini computer solutions, I am targeting the $75 to $150, and maybe up to $250 if it has all the features I looking for.

I have tried the Roku device and it works pretty good, but I am trying avoid another Roku, Apple TV,

Does anyone know of a good program/app to be screen mirror Apple products without using the building Wi-Fi?

Apple products can use Chromecast, if whatever app you're streaming from has Chromecast support bundled in. It's not very convenient to make anyone download an extra app to their device – it's much simpler to plug in directly.

The Church is developing an app called "LDS Media Library" that's now in public beta. Both the iOS and Android versions work with Chromecast (and the iOS version supports AirPlay as well). Updated hardware options for meetinghouses are still be weighed and they haven't come to a conclusion yet (and they likely won't have decided on a solution for the worldwide Church anytime soon). There are lots of ideas bouncing around.

Personally, I don't think anything is simpler or more reliable than having some physical cords handy, matching which one fits your device, and plugging it in. Even easier, you could have an HDMI splitter/switch with all of the options already plugged in on the TV end (HDMI to HDMI, VGA to HDMI, Lightning to HDMI, MicroUSB to HDMI, Chromecast HDMI). Wireless solutions are cool, but they often require navigating through menus and troubleshooting to get them to work, which scares away inexperienced technology users and distracts from the class.

Not to mention the risk of being highjacked.

I am very interested in the app "LDS Media Library" that's now in public beta. I looked on the google play store and could not find the app. Can the link be provided here?

Any hopes of having a Windows 10 universal app version of the LDS Media Library in the near future? That would be great to have.

As an STS, I can't tell how many people I have that have had to try to use their own android device and some iDevices (iPhone, iPad) how to use their device basically and for more than e-,mail and social media.

It sounds like I will need something like this: http://www.dell.com/us/p/inspiron-11-31 ... -laptop/pd (touch screen 2 in 1) and may install Blue Stacks or other android emulator on it for the current church android apps. Now if it works as a great webcast receiver, I am good to go. :) They can even use a wired mouse if they prefer. I may try to see about having 1 per building in the library for check out if I can have assistant technology specialist ready to assist at each building.

Many in my stake cannot afford the "golden" iDevices since for the same price or less, they can get a full featured laptop, 2 in 1 or convertible. Others still have their 6 year old or older computer, particularly desktop computer that is still going strong, but of course cannot easily bring to the building. Over the past year I am seeing more and more Microsoft Surface devices or similar devices popping up and less iPads.

My other goal at my stake is to provide each building with newer display technology. Still working on replacing my last CRT TV and some older projectors with no HDMI connection and bad and really old portable projection screens, which I hope all have replace by next year.

Hopefully you're working with the FM Group on that and not using donations or unit funds.
