I notice it's been several years since this topic has been discussed. But I was wondering why the church blocks Youtube? Last week we had access, and now we don't. We use Youtube quite often to show various spiritual videos.

No doubt the problem is some kind of abuse. People looking at videos that are not church related. It may also be a move to prevent nearby residences from using church WiFi.

If you navigate to a church video from the lds.org page, you should be directed to a server that is visible to you. At home you'd be directed to YouTube, not at church the same page may direct you to a different site.

The pattern I've observed is that YouTube becomes allowed near General Conference and then disappears some time afterwards. If YouTube is no longer allowed on the general network, that would indicate the pattern remains.

I stopped by the chapel tonight. Indeed, it looks like YouTube is blocked.

According to a email just sent to all the STSs, the church has opened YouTube for the month of December for the Light the World campaign. It will be locked down afterwards.

Just received following e-mail:
Dear Stake Technology Specialist,

The Church has launched a new media campaign, Light the World, for this Christmas season. To facilitate this campaign and other Church related media, YouTube.com has been made available on meetinghouse Internet for the month of December.

Please help stake leaders and teachers understand the intent and purpose of allowing YouTube access during the Christmas season. Please also help them understand that access will be blocked again shortly after.

Leaders and members are encouraged to continue to follow best practices by downloading media content beforehand to help preserve bandwidth.

Thank you,
Meetinghouse Technology Coordination Team
