Multiple Asst Financial Ward Clerks

#1

Post by paxvista »

Our Stake recently recognized that we have two asst ward clerks over finance and is asking we release one. I can't seem to find anything indicating that having more than one Asst Ward Clerk over finance is discouraged. It seems like many wards have multiple finance clerks so that if one goes out of town, there is someone who can help with the deposit. Are having multiple Asst Financial Ward Clerks discouraged?

I don't know of any policy and I've been in wards where we had multiple finance clerks. In one case we had a long time clerk who started to have health problems so we called a second to act as a backup. LCR allows multiple finance clerks to be entered and usually LCR will enforce policies that limit a calling to only one person.

However, clerks are called by the stake so ultimately it is up to the Stake President to decide what is appropriate for his stake. If the stake president is concerned about multiple finance clerks, you could see how he feels about changing one to just an Assistant Ward Clerk. The Assistant Ward Clerk has both membership and finance rights and could act as a backup for either side. That leaves one finance clerk to be primarily responsible for finances (perhaps the Stake President is concerned that with 2 clerks neither one has primary stewardship over the finance records).

Though, the assistant clerks are just that – assistants – whether membership, financial, or general. The ward clerk has primary stewardship for both membership and finance.

According to an email we received this week, beginning on March 2, 2020, each ward will be limited to one "Ward Assistant Clerk--Finance".

We received the letter as well and it was only being sent to those wards exceeding the recommended #. The letter said the following assistants are allowed:
  • Ward assistant clerk
  • Ward assistant clerk—membership
  • Ward assistant clerk—finance
  • Stake assistant clerk
  • Stake assistant clerk—membership
  • Stake assistant clerk—finance

But does "Ward assistant clerk" still have finance rights? And how many of them can you have?

Unless I'm missing something, that's always been the case. Or, are you saying a unit can only have one of each?

The letter said you can only have one of each. The email said if more than 1 person is assigned to that position come March 2, all will be released from that position and it will need to be fixed by the ward clerk so that only one has that calling. I assume Ward Assistant Clerk has finance rights -- the letter didn't say anything about that changing.

Thanks for that clarification.

I've since found out this change is aimed at those units that used the clerk calling to grant access to information.

Our usage of the clerk calling was in response to instructions from our mission president and our area authority Seventy. We just do what we're told.

The mission president is aware of this change.
