New stake presidency

Our stake is getting a new stake presidency in a few weeks, and I have looked in vain for some kind of checklist of all the things that need to be taken care of in such a transition. Anyone have anything like that? Or if you've recently been through it, have some tips or suggestions? I'm compiling a list of things, such as faxing in the leadership change form, the missionary website, ldscatalog.com, and such, but don't want to overlook something important.

Don't forget to update the stake website. :D That way the members can look up the new leaders. In some cases the positions held in the website turn on added features elsewhere. For example, being on the stake website gets me some emails from church for my STS calling.

Update MLS.

Somewhere in the list is one for updating the bank card for check signing. I *think* that may be printable from MLS.

The signature card is indeed printable from MLS -- it's under Reports/Forms, Print Form, Signature Card.

You may also want to contact the Mission Office, the Temple President, and surrounding Stake Presidents to let them know of the change and give them the new Presidency's information. (Obviously, this would all be done AFTER the new Presidency is sustained). This is helpful for them to have when they need to contact your Stake President--and they won't be calling the previous one.

The general authority who presides at the conference will take care of the Church Directory update, and from that update, all of the other sites will update, including missionary, temple entry, etc.

Update the LUWS.

Update MLS.

Print a new signature card from MLS and have the new presidency sign it, along with the existing clerks and/or executive secretary who do not necessarily change.

After the CDOL has changed, order new business envelopes for the new stake president.

Lesson learned the hard way

If your new president goes by his middle name, meaning his name is represented by his first initial, middle name, last name (P. Jon Doe), you'll want to be very specific with the order. I ended up with a box of envelopes in the traditional first name, middle initial, last name format and had to put stickers over the return address of each to match my president's preference. :(

Also, make sure that the stake president gets logged in to at least the Missionary Recommendation System. A login to the LUWS, the Temple Entry System, and the online Directory of Leaders would also be helpful. Some of these are the same login, but require activation once the new president is actually entered in the Church's databases. And some stake presidents login to MLS, so that might be a good idea as well.

lajackson mentioned that the authority for these sites will be given automatically once the new stake president's calling has been processed, but he will still have to create the logins for these systems.

He will need a letter from CHQ before he will be able to setup a login to the Church Directory of Leaders (CDOL). The letter will contain a key code to use the first time he logs in. He will only need the code once.

If he does not have one already, he should establish a LUWS login. This same login can be used for the Missionary Recommendation System and the Temple Entry System. While he can setup a LUWS login now, he will not be recognized in the Missionary or Temple systems until the Church Directory is updated by Salt Lake.

I believe he will also receive instructions from CHQ on how to login to the unit e-mail system.

He may want to use his personal e-mail address for things that come from the Temple or Mission presidents, or he may prefer to use the Church e-mail system. In any event, the released stake president ought to know the new stake president's e-mail address and set up a little routine to forward Church-related messages to the new president, along with a note to the sender advising of the new president's name and e-mail address. (And address and phone and other contact info, if the new stake president desires.

Charge accounts and bills

Another thing for a new stake president is to change the address for vendors and other bills that need to be mailed to the stake president. As a practical matter, that can be done over time as the correspondence comes in -- our stake president was changed over a year ago and we still get some bills mailed to the prior stake president.

Our stake is reorganizing in a week.

How do I get the new president logged on to the church email system and the other special sites? I am unfamiliar with them myself.

Thank you,

Michael Klobas
