Stake Laptop

#1

Post by davemoore99 »

Hello, my 1st post here on the forum. I'm a new Stake Tech Specialist and had a question from a fellow HC member. Can someone direct me on where I could find a laptop that the church recommends on purchasing for our Stake Center. This will be something myself or other leaders use when there are presentations in the Stake Center Building. Can I get specs and or recommended laptops to purchase. I'd like to pass this along to our Stake President for further discussion. Thanks! btw love this forum and all the info and help on it.

Welcome to the Forum.

To the best of my knowledge, the Church does not recommend any particular laptop.

Our stake does not have one. It was decided that the amount of use it would get would not be worth the expense before it had to be replaced, and that keeping it up to date would be problematic.

If someone wishes to present at a stake meeting, they either bring their own device or ask that the stake plan to display a particular Church website, in which case I bring my laptop or a member of the presidency uses theirs.

For the two Sundays of stake conference, the AV specialists in the receiving locations use their own laptops or have arranged to have a trusted member help them with their laptop. We have found members willing to do that twice a year. If we were not able to do that, the stake has already determined that they would not purchase and maintain multiple laptops, but rather would have the FM Group lay the wiring so that an administrative computer could be used instead.

That said, I am sure some stakes have laptops and use and maintain them for conferences and the occasional leadership meeting.

As a new STS, you may want to familiarize your self with the Meetinghouse Technology Policy. Section 4.2.3 is relevant to your question.

Thanks for the replies! I will continue doing research on the subject and take your advice by reviewing Section 4.2.3

My biggest concern with laptops or any other computer that is not used frequently is that every time you turn it on and login, it is going to spend a certain amount of time trying to update itself. The longer it is off or asleep, the longer it will take to update itself. Many folks are impatient and get frustrated, thinking the computer is always slow whenever they want to use it.

What's more, lower end laptops come with Windows 10 Home and updates cannot be deferred like it can be for Enterprise.
