"Updated" Local Unit Computer Instructions

#1

Post by Mikerowaved »

I'm a bit disappointed that the "updated" Local Unit Computer Instructions (Updated 23 January 2012), as found on mls.lds.org, still describes the old Windows XP procedure. Windows 7 has been shipping on all new PC's for quite some time now and the installation procedure is NOT the same as described for Windows XP. This webpage should be brought up to date.

Some work is being done to update not only the linked instructions but all items linked from mls.lds.org. It has been neglected and is now really showing it's age. Hopefully soon we will at least have the content updated.

Is it just me or is the " Local Unit Computer Management Software Installer.exe"installer now missing from the http://mls.lds.org page? I went to do a new computer today and the LANdesk installer appears to be missing.

No, it's not just you. That software is referred to in the updated instructions (as "Local Unit Security Suite"), but the instructions can't be followed as written, since there is no link to download that piece.

You are probably aware as you were a contributor on the thread, but I posted some rudimentary instructions in this post.

I am a Church employee and was just assigned to be the Product Manager for the Clerk Computer. One of my first projects will be to update the "Computer Set-up Instructions" so that they match the experience you would have when getting a new machine. Having gone through the setup process in my own ward last year, I completely understand how frustrating it can be to set things up without accurate instructions. I'm excited to own this project and hope to have it complete in the next week or so!

You are correct that we have removed the link to the "Local Unit Computer Management Software." This was in preparation for moving to a new management tool. I'll post more about that when we get closer to releasing it.

You may have also noticed that the "Local Unit Security Software" was updated. Instead of linking you to Sophos Endpoint Security version 7, the link now delivers Sophos Endpoint Security version 9.5. We are in the process of pushing out the updated version to all clerk machines. If your machine hasn't received the update yet, feel free to install the updated version manually. Please note that 1) your computer needs to reboot to finish the installation process and 2) the Anti-Virus and Firewall functionality will be combined into a single icon.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Including the ones on dial-up? The download from the site is 130MB.

Thanks for the update bfromm. Will this new management tool incorporate any access/support for local Stake Technology Specialists? I understand it is nice to have support tools for CHQ, but since we're the first line of support it'd be nice to have some kind of management / support tools we could access w/o having to use our own bailing-wire-and-duct-tape solutions.

Something to consider, if you already haven't done so...

That seems premature. When you removed that link, you made it impossible for any unit to install any management software on new or reimaged computers. I don't see how that helps prepare for a new tool. Instead, you create a situation where units may have no management software at all. How can that be helpful?

Other then the rare occasion when LANDesk was used to give LUS remote access to a broadband connected machine, how was the old software helpful?
