The current Primary class naming system started in January of 2010.

The Primary rules of deciding which class to attend based on age on 1 January will conflict in one case and one case only with the new guidance on youth progression for Sunday School, YW and the AP.

Those lucky enough to be born on 1 January dutifully progress in Primary, becoming a Valuant 10 at age 10, their birthday, on 1 Jan.

The next year, they have to wait a year to be a Deacon, Beehive, because they aren't turning 12.

Their friend from nursery who was born 1 day later on 2 Jan waits an extra year to get out of nursery and doesn't have a null year at age 11 because they move up.

The solution?

Put primary on the same footing as the rest of the youth, not the 1 January rule. Change is to needing to be that age by 31 Dec of the previous year, so all age based classes are based on the year they are born. Sunbeam is then for those who are age 3 by the end of the previous year. For 2019, it would include all those born in 2015. All sunbeams turn 4 in that year, including both the 1 and 2 Jan child.


All classes then are based on the year born, or years born if classes are combined.

That has been discussed rather extensivly in this thread. Note the post by a church employee that says "the presiding councils who make these decisions are aware of that issue."

Latest LCR updates on 20 Dec show this is now prepped to be done. Also, can now print a whole year's worth (formerly) of the youth priesthood advancements interview forms, with the earliest date hardcoded as 1 jan 2019. Yeah!

Now just need to be a ble to print a bucket load (former years worth) of Primary advancement certificates! I'm sure they are workin on it in the next couple of weeks.

You should provide feedback from the LDS.org print certificates page. The decision makers do not visit this forum so comments here won't make a difference unless someone else on this user-to-user help forum has a workaround they can share.

The release notes say that the "guidelines direct that children and youth are assigned to a class or quorum based upon the year they turn a certain age. The Valiant 11 Primary class will be discontinued, and the Course 11 Sunday School class will be made available." The system has put the youth into the class based on their age as of January 1st. Thus 11 year olds are in Course 11 and 12 year olds are in Course 12 etc. They should have just left things alone and created a Course 18 for those that are turning 18 in 2019.

The way it works now is consistent with the way it worked before January 1 and consistent with the way Primary works now.

On January 1, 2018, a member who was 11 years old on January 1 was in Valiant 11. A member who was 12 years old on January 1 was in Course 12.

On January 1, 2019, a member who was 11 years old* on January 1 is in Course 11. A member who is 12 years old on January 1 is in Course 12.

* There is an exception to this rule for members born on January 1, which is a known issue. That issue has gone to the councils responsible for making the decision, they understand the issue, and aware of the implications of how that affects members born on January 1.

Your proposal (Course 18 consists of those turning 18 in 2019) is not consistent with the way all of the other classes are numbered, from CTR 4 up through the youth Sunday School classes. At a minimum, it would require redefining all of the course numbers for youth Sunday School classes, which would result in a gap between Valiant 10 and Course 12.

Totally agree with you but had a Stake Sunday School President tell our Ward SS President that they had to go into the "Course" for the age they would be turn in 2019. i.e. 11 year olds on January 1st would be in "Course 12". Needless to say, the system put everyone into proper course where they should be.
