An update on an alternative configuration. To hit the choir 'sweet spot' locations we needed a very tall microphone since the ceiling was not of practical use.
Here are photos of a carbon fiber floor standing microphone. It's kind of a poor mans Audix, but taller. It uses an 8 foot 0.301in. diameter carbon fiber tube obtained from Goodwinds LLC in Mount Vernon WA, an On Stage MSA7040TB telescoping boom with an Audio Technica PRO45 choir microphone. Total cost was under $150/unit. No counter balance is need until the boom is about 30 degrees from vertical. The microphone was attached with a piece of wire wound as a spring and pushed into the tube. The microphone wire was just taped on in a few places. A standard microphone stand was pressed into service. The boom was drilled to allow the rod to pass thru the entire assembly. A plastic internal liner provides enough friction to keep the rod from slipping.
In actual practice, the stand was not extended and the rod was almost vertical.
