Sustaining Assistant Technology Specialists

#1

Post by dougj »

A question arose about sustaining and setting apart Assistant Technology Specialists. We could not find this calling listed on the 'Chart of Callings'. There are other callings that don't require sustaining and setting apart.

If they should be sustained, is this done in the ward where they serve or in every ward in the stake? (It is a stake calling, after all.)

Also, will they show on the MLS calling/sustaining report used at Stake Conference and ward conferences?

Assistant Technology Specialist is listed on LCR under the Technology category, along with Stake Website Administrator. I am not sure if a sustaining vote is needed, but the calling could be mentioned as a FYI item on the stake sustaining list. Since this position is not listed as an Assistant Stake Clerk, I would not expect to see it on the Officers Sustained form.

In the 3 July letter, the position is described as a stake assignment. As such there is no need to have them sustained or set apart. He or she reports to the STS, if there is one, or to the stake clerk or an assigned assistant stake clerk if there is no STS.

I don't know much about when sustaining and setting apart is required, but it is always a blessing to a member for him to be sustained and set apart for a position – members of the stake would know who he is and could support him in his calling; and, being set apart allows you to be given blessings that will help you in your calling.

I think if we truly understood what it means to be sustained and set apart, we wouldn't make the decision lightly! :)

Do assistant technology specialists need to be recorded in MLS?

Yes. As a stake calling, assistant technology specialists should be recorded in MLS at the stake level. Instructions for putting technology specialists into MLS correctly are found at mhtech.lds.org. This article also discusses the benefits of doing so.
