translation equipment help

Postby jviola » Sat Sep 16, 2017 4:17 pm

We have translation equipment that we use in our stake conference. A brother came to me and said that the equipment picked up the frequency of the microphone from the pulpit. He said he can hear it in his headset. Which is good and something we want, but I'm not sure where it is coming from? What is transmitting to the translation equipment?

I don't know how your meetinghouse is set up, but most have a transmitter from the chapel amplifier that feeds the receivers used by those who need hearing assistance.

Both the translation equipment and the assisted listening devices use the same frequency band. So it's no surprise that the translation receivers can pick up the chapel microphone. I'd suggest either tuning the translation receiver to the correct channel, changing the translation transmitter to a different channel (it may require changing some dip switches). The assisted listening devices are generally the same channel across all LDS chapels. Messing with the chapel's sound system would be discouraged - it's usually in a locked cabinet.

If it's a poor receiver that can't distinguish between the two, keep in mind that FM broadcasts experience the "capture effect" where the strongest signal will grab the receiver. I'd move the listeners closer to the translator's transmitter and away from where the sound system cabinet is.
