Land line phones disconnected

Post by mackayr »

Our ward recently lost our two landlines as a result of a "recent SLC communication". How broad is this initiative? We have a few members who are a bit concerned about the change and I'm curious what the experience has been like (if applicable) for other units.

Very broad. In a letter dated 27 August 2018 that was sent to Stake Presidents, Stake Clerks, and the Stake Technology Specialists, the church directed a review of phone use and have unnecessary/unused/underutilized phones disconnected. Guidance was provided about cases where the phone should be retained. Such as to support an alarm system, provide internet connectivity, frequently used for church purposes, or if cell coverage is poor

In an era where cell phones are ubiquitous, I'm curious as to what the member's concerns are.

At least in my area, the church pays for phones at a "business" rate, which isn't cheap. Multiply it by the number of wards and stakes, the cost to the church is significant.

Throughout the United States and Canada under the direction of the Presiding Bishopric. Your leaders should have seen instructions last year concerning the plan and objective. I would expect that the concerns of some of your members were addressed in the information that was provided.

If your leaders are not familiar with the instructions, their technology specialists were also to be involved in the process that was outlined in the 28 September 2018 Notice last year. I would start there and with your bishop and stake president if there are concerns.
