Including the ones on dial-up?

Yes, all machines are targeted including dial-up computers. Since these machines may not stay stay connected long enough to get the update, it would be great to leave them conneted for a few hours every now and then to get updates like this. It's also possible/recommended to download the software from a machine with broadband internet access, save it to a thumb drive, and then copy it to the clerk machine. We will continue to move units to broadband connections where possible.

How do we do that? MLS controls the connection. It not up to us how long it stays connected.

I believe MLS triggers a dial-up profile in Windows. If you were to manually trigger the dial-up connection yourself (not using MLS) it would probably stay connected until you disconnected it. Assuming of course you don't have MLS running which may take it over.

If you manually trigger it, it asks for a password, which AFAIK, has never been given out.

Of course downloading 130MB over a 33.6 kbit/s modem connection would take a long time and could be expensive (depending on the phone bill setup).

Downloading to USB at home and installing is probably still a better option.

You are more than welcome to move our computers to broadband anytime you wish to do so. We have been waiting patiently for eight years.

In the meantime, would you like us to do anything different than we are already doing? If so, you are welcome to send a request with accompanying instructions by any manner you feel will arrive in the clerks office: MLS message, e-mail to stake technology specialists, letter to priesthood leaders, etc.

We will make a valiant attempt to follow the instructions.

One of my first projects will be to update the "Computer Set-up Instructions" so that they match the experience you would have when getting a new machine. Having gone through the setup process in my own ward last year, I completely understand how frustrating it can be to set things up without accurate instructions. I'm excited to own this project and hope to have it complete in the next week or so!
It's been about 3 weeks, I just checked the link, and the PDF still has the old instructions for XP. Any idea when this will be ready? I am expecting a new PC for one of our wards within the next 2 weeks. We are on broadband and have been for some time. If we could get the instructions posted now for units that have high speed Internet, then post the more detailed, dial up for units still using dial up, it would be great.

bfromm wrote: You are correct that we have removed the link to the "Local Unit Computer Management Software." This was in preparation for moving to a new management tool. I'll post more about that when we get closer to releasing it.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

I have ten new computers to install/update and make operational in the next two weeks so, yes I have some questions, as I am sure you can guess.
