Viruses (Family Safety)

Family safety

A computer virus is a type of malicious software that replicates itself and can potentially do harm to the files and data on the computer.

The Internet creates an environment where computer viruses can spread very quickly and can do quite a bit of damage. Because of the popularity of social networking, it is very common for computer viruses, spyware and other malicious software to spread between friends and acquaintances quickly and easily.

Not all viruses will destroy data, but there are still no "good" viruses. It is important to install and maintain some sort of protection against these applications, normally referred to as an "anti-virus" application. There are free antivirus applications available for immediate download and installation, so there is really no reason for a computer to be unprotected today.
