The translation glossary is a list of common terms and their preferred translations. This list is limited to technical terms. Do not add non-technical, doctrinal, or scriptural terms to the list.

access point punto de accesso ponto de acesso An access point is the connection that ties wireless communication devices into a network. Also known as a base station, the access point is usually connected to a wired network.
adapter adaptador adaptador Hardware that allows the computers that are part of a network to communicate with each other.
Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader A program used for viewing and printing files that are in Portable Document Format (PDF). The Acrobat Reader is available for free at http://www.adobe.com/
alert aviso alerta A message or other indication that identifies a problem or an impending problem.
Ancestry.com Ancestry.com Ancestry.com A subscription-based genealogy research Web site that supplies genealogical information.
application applicación aplicativo Software programs, such as word processors and spreadsheets that most users use to do work on a computer.
attachments archivos adjuntos anexos Computer files that are sent along with an e-mail message.
audio feed flujo de audio fluxo de áudio, alimentação de áudio The transmission of an audio signal from point to point
bandwidth ancho de banda largura de banda The amount of information you can send through a computer connection. Usually measured in bits-per-second (bps).
bit bit/dígito binario bit Binary digit: A single digit number in base-2, in other words, either a 1 or a zero. The smallest unit of computerized data.
blog blog/bitácora Short for "Web log," a blog is basically a journal that is available on the Web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog.
browse navegar/buscar navegar/procurar To search or look through various items on a computer to make a selection, such as a list of titles, authors, subjects.
bytes octetos bytes A set of bits that represent a single character. Usually there are 8 bits in a byte.
category 5 Ethernet cable cable Ethernet de categoría 5 cabo Ethernet (de) categoria 5 A cable that contains four pairs of copper wire, typically used to connect computers to the internet or with other computers. Category 5 Ethernet cable (Cat5) supports connections up to 100mbps.
CCN CCN (Red de Comunicaciones de la Iglesia) CCN Church Communications Network: The Church's global network. Leave in English.
Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders (CDOL) Directorio de la Iglesia de Organizaciones y Líderes (CDOL) Catálogo (Diretório) de Organizações e Líderes da Igreja A database that contains information about all Church units and their leaders and positions.
Church Satellite System Sistema de satélite de la Iglesia The system of satellites and receivers that delivers programs, conferences, firesides, and training to Church members, primarily at stake meetinghouses.
client cliente cliente A software program that is used to contact and obtain data from a Server software program on another computer, often across a great distance.
command prompt símbolo del sistema prompt de comando A character or string of characters used in a command line interface to indicate that the computer is ready to accept typed input.
configure configurar configurar The act of changing software or hardware actions by changing the settings.
Control Panel Panel de control Painel de Controle A program used to change some setting in the operating system or computer.
CPU time tiempo de CPU tempo de CPU Time spent by the Central Processing Unit (the processor) when the system is running on behalf of the process.
default gateway puerta de enlace predeterminada gateway padrão A node on a computer network that serves as an access point to another network.
DHCP DHCP DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol: DHCP is a protocol by which a machine can obtain an IP number (and other network configuration information) automatically from a server on the local network
DNS server servidor DNS servidor DNS Domain Name System (or Service) server. An Internet service that translates the name of the web site typed into the location field of a browser into the corresponding IP address.
double-click doble clic clicar duas vezes To depress and release a mouse button twice in quick succession. (In Windows, "double-click" usually refers to the left mouse button).

drop-down menu menú desplegable menu suspenso A menu of commands or options that appears below the item when you select an item with a mouse.
E-mail Correo electrónico Electronic mail messages, usually text, sent from one person to another via computer.
Family Record Extraction Extracción de registros familiares Extração de Registros Familiares The process by which a member of the Church transcribes names, dates and places from copies of original vital records into a central database in Salt Lake City. The resulting data is accessible to the public for genealogical research.
FamilySearch Indexing (FSI) Indexación de FamilySearch Indexação do FamilySearch A computer program where volunteers extract family history information from digital images of historical documents to create indexes that assist everyone in finding their ancestors.

Google "define" Google "definir" Many of the definitions provided in this glossary were obtained by entering "define: <term>" in the Google search box, where <term> is the word or phrase for which the definition is desired.
GroupWise GroupWise GroupWise A workgroup application suite offering electronic mail and diary scheduling from Novell, Inc. Leave in English.
indexing indexación indexação Often used to refer to the automatic selection and compilation of ‘meaningful’ words from a Web site into a list that can be used by a search system to retrieve pages.
International Genealogical Index (IGI) Índice Genealógico Internacional (IGI) Índice Genealógico Internacional (IGI) An index of over 90 million names prepared by the Church giving marriages, births, and christenings in every country of the world.
IP IP IP Internet Protocol. A packet-based protocol for delivering data across networks.

kilobyte kilobyte/kiloocteto kilobyte A thousand bytes. Actually, usually 1024 (210) bytes.
LAN LAN (red local) LAN (rede local) local area network. A computer network limited to the immediate area, usually the same building or floor of a building.
LDS.org LDS.org LDS.org The main Web site for the Church. (www.lds.org). Leave in English.
LDSMail.Net LDSMail.Net LDSMail.Net An e-mail service provided by the Church used by lay leadership in conducting Church business. Leave in English.
MB MB (megabyte/megaocteto) MB Megabyte. Technically speaking, a million bytes. In many cases the term means 1024 kilobytes, which is more than an even million.
mbps mbps mbps mega-bits-per-second. A measure of bandwidth.
MLS Servicios para Miembros y Líderes (MLS) MLS Member and Leader Services: a software program for use by unit leaders, clerks, auxiliary, quorum leaders, and secretaries at both the ward and stake levels to help make Church record keeping easier and more efficient.
Missionary Recommendation System Sistema de Recomendación para Misioneros The Web application that allows prospective missionaries, bishops, stake presidents, and designated clerks to fill out, review, and submit the required paperwork for the prospective missionary to receive a mission call.
network red rede The connection of two or more computers together so that they can share resources.
network adapter tarjeta de red adaptador de rede A device that allows a computer to communicate with other computers on a network for high-speed communication.
network folders carpetas de red pastas da rede A collection of files stored on a shared computing resource (server). Folders can hold files and other folders for organizational purposes
Official Communications Library (OCL) Biblioteca de Correspondencia Oficial (BCO) An archive of the letters and notices sent from Church headquarters to ecclesiastical leaders.
parity error error de paridad erro de paridade The integrity of transmitted data is sometimes determined by comparing the parity of the data (the number of ones and zeros in binary data) with the parity of the source data. A difference indicates corrupt data.
PDF PDF PDF Portable Document Format: an open file format created and controlled by Adobe Systems for representing two-dimensional documents in a device-independent and resolution-independent, fixed-layout document format. Leave in English.
peer-to-peer network red par a par (o entre pares/iguales) rede P2P, rede ponto a ponto A network in which computing resources and files are shared without a centralized management source.
Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) Fondo Perpetuo para la Educación (FPE) Fundo Perpétuo de Educação (FPE) A fund setup by the Church to offer loans to youth in developing areas of the Church. Its purpose is to help them get a better education, so they can get a better job and better serve their families, the Church, and their communities. Participants are expected to repay these loans, beginning soon after they start school.
pop-up blocker bloqueador de elementos emergentes bloqueador de pop-up A tool used by most internet browsers to block ads that pop-up while viewing a Web page.
port puerto porta A place where information goes into or out of a computer
power injector inyector de energía injetor de energia Hardware necessary to run both power and network communications over an Ethernet cable.

proxy server servidor intermedio servidor proxy A program that acts as a liaison between a workstation and a web server. A proxy server caches information to provide faster access to web pages and increase network security.

static IP address dirección IP estática endereço IP fixo An IP Address whose value does not change. (Every computer connected to the internet is assigned a unique number known as an Internet Protocol (IP) address.)

TCP/IP TCP/IP TCP/IP Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol. This is the suite of protocols that defines the Internet.
toolbar barra de herramientas barra de ferramentas A set of buttons, usually with an icon of some sort, that are used to activate a program's function.
UNC UNC UNC Universal Naming Convention: specifies a common syntax to describe the actual location on a network resource, such as a shared file, folder or printer.
USB USB USB Universal Serial Bus. An external peripheral interface standard for communication between a computer and external peripherals over a cable.
wizard asistente assistente An interactive computer program which acts as an interface to lead a user through a complex task, using step-by-step dialogs.
