Nonmember Record for Linked Records?

I'm a bit confused by the statement "If the local priesthood leader and individual agree to have a nonmember record created in the local MLS." (I reworded it slightly to make it a complete sentence, but I still don't really understand it.) I think this is trying to say that a linked record may or may not have an actual corresponding nonmember record in MLS, and that doing so requires agreement by both the local priesthood leader and the individual.

But I don't understand how this is to be done. If you create a regular nonmember record in MLS, it will not be the linked record; rather it will have a temporary record number that contains the unit number. Or is such a nonmember record somehow created via a Special Request? I've never done anything like that, and the explanation seemed a bit sketchy, so I think some clarification would be helpful. -- Aebrown 19:07, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the confusion, the linked record for a spouse or child will show on an individual record in MLS, but will not show on any roles or in the household records. If the family and local leader wish to have the name show on class roles and in the household record in MLS, a nonmember record needs to be created in MLS. The linked record is generally created when a person in the family is baptized and they list other family members when the baptism is recorded. Hope this provides a little clarification, I will edit the article to reflect this. Thanks!! --Caleb 20:09, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. I had wondered why some nonmembers listed on membership records seem to have normal MRNs, and that explains it. So the bit about creating nonmember records in MLS really has nothing to do with the topic of Linked Records, except that you wanted to clarify that the creation of a Linked Record at CHQ would not have the effect of creating a nonmember record in local MLS; if that is desired, a separate nonmember record would have to be created (which would not have the linked record's MRN on it). Right?
P.S. When you respond to questions on a Discussion page, the standard wiki practice is to indent the answer one more level than the question was indented. Just precede your comment with one more colon. If your response takes multiple paragraphs (such as this one), indent all paragraphs in your response the same. -- Aebrown 20:41, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
You are exactly right with the nonmember records and MLS, and thanks again for the tip! -- Caleb 21:00, 10 April 2009 (UTC)
