Scripture Mastery Android Environment Setup

Scripture Mastery for Android Index edit

JDK

This project requires Java 6. To download and install Java 6, go to the Java 6 JDK Download Page and follow the installation instructions for your platform.

Maven

This project requires Maven 3 (or greater) to be installed. To download and install Maven 3, go to the Maven Download Page and follow the installation instructions for your platform.

Android SDK and Platform

In order to develop Android projects, you will need to install the Android SDK, download the Android 16 Platform, and set certain environment variables.

Installation

You will first need to download the Android SDK and follow the Installation Instructions.

Dowloading Components

Once you have downloaded and installed the Android SDK, you will need to download the data for specific Android platforms. To do this, follow the instructions for Adding Platforms and Packages. When prompted to choose what to install, install "Android SDK Platform-tools" and the Android 4.3 SDK Platform.

If you do not have an Android device, or if you want to use the debugger while developing, you will also need to download the Android 4.3 "ARM EABI v7a System Image". This package will allow you to use an on-screen emulator for development.

Environment Variables

You will need to set your ANDROID_HOME environment variable to point to your Android SDK directory. The instructions for setting environment variables varies from platform to platform, so check out these pages for Windows, Mac, and Linux

Eclipse

While not required, we recommend the use of the Eclipse IDE. It has excellent Android integration and Maven support. If you would prefer to use a different IDE, IntelliJ is also highly recommended. It tends to handle Android libraries (such as ActionBarSherlock) and Maven better than Eclipse.

To download and install Eclipse, go to the Eclipse Download Page and download "Eclipse Classic" for your platform. Once downloaded, extract the file to a permanent location on your computer. To launch Eclipse, open the installation directory and double click the "eclipse" program.

ADT

Once you have opened Eclipse, you can install the Android Developer Tools (ADT) Plugin by following these Installation Instructions.

Subclipse

Subclipse is an Eclipse plugin that allows you to use SVN repositories from the Eclipse interface. To install Subclipse, copy the 1.8.x release "Eclipse Update Site URL" from the Subclipse Download Page, paste it into the "Help > Install New Software" window in Eclipse, and hit enter. A list of packages that can be installed will appear. Check the following boxes:

  • Subclipse
    • Subclipse
    • Subversion Client Adapter
  • SVNKit
    • SVNKit Client Adapter
    • SVNKit Library

Then hit Next/Next/Accept/Finish/OK/Restart to install them.

m2eclipse

To integrate Maven with Eclipse, we use a plugin called "m2eclipse", or sometimes just "m2e" for short. To install m2e, go to the m2eclipse Download Page and copy the Eclipse update URL into the "Help > Install New Software" window of Eclipse. Then follow the prompts until installation is complete.

m2e-android

m2e-android integrates Maven+Android in Eclipse. To install this plugin, copy the following URL into the Eclipse "Help > Install New Software" window and hit enter:

http://rgladwell.github.io/m2e-android/updates/master/

Once the available packages have loaded, check the box titled "Android Connector for M2E". Click through the prompts until installation is complete.

Please note that the URL given above is a cutting-edge development URL. I recommend that you use this URL because of these fixed issues that are currently not available in a stable release.

If this step gives you a problem make sure you have the latest version of Eclipse installed. You may also want to try the stable update URL: http://rgladwell.github.com/m2e-android/updates/

m2eclipse-subclipse

Finally, we use m2eclipse-subclipse to integrate Maven+SVN in Eclipse. To install this plugin, use this update site:

http://subclipse.tigris.org/m2eclipse/1.0

Once the packages have loaded in the "Help > Install New Software" window, check the package titled "Maven SCM Integration". As before, click through the prompts until the new package is installed.
