Mormon Channel Project Index edit

The Mormon Channel Android application is a streaming player that plays the Mormon Channel content. In addition this application will stream Ensign, New Era, and Friend magazine, General Conference, and LDS Scripture audio content.

Introduction

If anyone has any suggestions please add them to the suggestion section below.

The Mormon Channel Android application is made up of the following software components:

  • Android SDK - The SDK includes a full set of tools for designing and developing an application. The MediaPlayer class is used to control playback of the Mormon Channel stream.
  • webservices - The application communicates with some web services which deliver content. These web services tell the application which streams are available. These web services are hosted on the Church's web site.

For more information, see the Mormon Channel Android Application Charter.

Suggestions

Please add suggestions below:

  1. Fast forward / rewind controls.
    • Feature Description: Preference would be to have a grab control on a progress meter similar to almost any other touch screen music player.
    • Feature Example: The need for this feature becomes more apparent when trying to get back to the place you had left off when listening to a long talk, chapter, or especially an entire session of conference.

  2. Disable Auto-lock
    • Feature Description: When enabled, the option to "Disable Auto-lock" would allow the user to override the default Auto-lock policy for the Android device for as long as the Mormon Channel app is playing content. To conserve battery power, the Mormon Channel app should temporarily lower display brightness after 30 seconds of inactivity and then restore brightness once the user taps the screen. The control to enable/disable the Disable Auto-lock feature should be listed in the settings dialog.
    • Feature Example: The Pandora app for Android currently has a similar feature. I find that this feature is especially important if I am listening to streaming audio while driving in the car. It is dangerous to have to constantly enter both unlock patterns while driving.

  3. Continuous Play
    • Feature Description: Allows user to automatically queue up and play the next chapter in book of scripture, the next article in a magazine, or the next talk in session of conference without having to click forward skip to move to the next track.
    • Feature Contributor: Nate Oleson 15:41, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
  4. Amplify sound
    • Feature Description: Preference to increase outgoing sound volume. At present, volume levels for many of the streams available on Mormon Channel (e.g. scriptures) are too low for listening without external amplification or ear plugs. Could be implemented with a list option (1x, 2x, 4x, 8x (?) amplification) for example.

  5. Add Mormon Stories feed
    • Feature Description: On the audio page, add a selection for the audio feed from mormonstories.org.
