MLS test data

- Individual research and learning about MLS.
- Online clerk training from home is improved with access to MLS.
- Support of other MLS users (particularly for ward and stake clerks with support responsibilities).
- Enhanced participation in beta testing of MLS (for units who participate in the beta).
- If used on a personal computer, obtain the MLS installation program. Stake Technology Specialists may download this from mls.lds.org (a password is required, but Technology Specialists have been given the password). Other clerks can obtain the installation program from their Technology Specialist.
- Once MLS is installed, start MLS and go to the Units page of System Options (administrator rights to MLS are required for this).
- Click on the Add Unit link.
- Add the special ward unit 108 and/or the special stake unit 2224445.
- MLS will detect these special unit numbers and automatically add test data.
Installation on specific operating systems
MLS is designed and tested to be installed on Church administrative computers running Windows XP Professional. But it can be installed on other versions of Windows by using the proper compatibility settings.
To set the compatibility mode for MLS, right-click on the shortcut used for launching MLS and choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab, choose the compatibility mode that will make it work (which may require some experimentation):
- Windows 2000 compatibility mode works well for Vista and Windows 7 (this may seem counterintuitive, but in most cases Windows 2000 mode works better than Windows XP mode).
- Specify "Run as administrator".
- If the above does not work, try the installation again, but set the above properties for the installation program before you do the installation (and then on MLS itself after installation).
Using the sample data
- When you login to MLS, if multiple units have been installed (as will certainly be the case with an administrative computer with test data installed), you need to be sure to select the correct unit number from the login screen.
- Make sure you login using the username and password appropriate to the test data unit.
- The test data includes people, but no organizational information, no HT/VT statistics, and very limited financial transactions. So all this needs to be added if you want to test these areas, but it's good practice to add such information anyway.
- Send/Receive does not actually communicate with Church Headquarters. Rather the transmission is simply simulated and two messages are placed in the MLS Messages area to indicate that the simulated transmission occurred.
