Country Web templates
To facilitate and standardize the design for country Web sites, the Church has prepared a country Web site template. You can see a sample template at http://apps.lds.org/cws/base. The template is built on Joomla.
Joomla is a content management system (CMS) selected by the Church as the current platform to build country Web sites. As a robust content management system, Joomla allows you to display your content in articles, menus, sidebars, and other areas of the site. You can add text, images, video using a built-in Web editor. You can also enable multiple authors and manage the content from any place you have Internet access.
This guide walks you through the process of creating a country Web site according to the template provided. It does not cover all aspects of Joomla.
To learn more about Joomla in general, you can consult a variety of sources online (for example, Lynda.com). You can also click the Help button on each page in Joomla. The help is context-sensitive, so it provides instruction based on the specific page you’re viewing.
Overview of the migration process
You have been set up with a country Web site installation in a production environment. The site has an IP address as the URL, which you will use as you build the site with content and configure the menus. The Web site is also populated with some sample pages and links, which you can change or delete.
As you migrate your content to the new site, you must copy and paste the articles one by one from your old site. You cannot import your content from another site using an automated script. As you migrate each piece of content, you can decide what to keep.
To customize the look of the front page, you can customize the banner and modify other aspects of the site, such as the sidebars, menus, and Featured Stories section. When you’re finished, you make your site live by repointing your regular domain to the IP address of the site.
You work with Joomla’s content management system through the administrator console. To log in to the administrator:
- Go to the URL that was sent to you.
- Log in with your LDS Account user name and password.
After you log in, you see the administrator console. You can create and manage all your content right here rather than using an external HTML editor such as Dreamweaver.
Site sections and labels
The country website has various sections. The black bar across the top is called the top menu. The links are centered and you can point them to anything you want.
The long graphic at the top is the Church banner and logo. They are actually two separate images that look like one image. The logo is on the left, the banner on the right.
You can swap in another banner image if you want. You can also connect different banners to different menu sections on the site, so that the banner will change as users navigate the site.
Several other banners have already been created. If you want a different banner, you can choose from the banners available or create your own.
Below the banner is the main menu. Unlike the top menu, the main menu can be structured with submenus. The submenus for the main menu appear when you move your mouse over a button.
The menu on the left is referred to as the navigation menu. You can customize this menu and populate the left sidebar with whatever content you want to show.
The home page of the site is called the front page. You can shorten the front page articles with “Read more” links so the articles don’t take up so much space. Articles that appear on the front page can also appear in the menus as well.
Like the left sidebar, the right sidebar is a place where you can add custom HTML or other Joomla modules. The default site has a link to Mormon Messages, a quote, and a link to maps.lds.org. At the base of the site is the footer.
Beyond changing each of these components, you can’t easily customize the other aspects of the site.
