Naming scriptures applications

We currently have an unnecessary inconsistency in how we name articles for mobile scriptures applications.

  • For titles, there are three different conventions:
    1. "<platform> Scriptures Application" (used by iPhone and Android)
    2. "<platform> Scripture Application" (used by Blackberry)
    3. "Mobile Scriptures <platform>" (used by Palm Pre and Windows Mobile)
  • In addition, the "BlackBerry" is appropriately spelled with two uppercase B's, but rarely do we spell it that way.

I vote for:

  • Main article titles: "Mobile Scriptures <platform> Application", which isn't any of the three current conventions, but matches the Mormon Channel convention. They are all similar projects and should match Mormon Channel, as well as each other.
  • Detail article titles: spell out "Application"; don't use a dash; follow MOS in not capitalizing words that are not proper nouns. It is reasonable to consider the application name to be a proper noun, so a sample detail page title would be "BlackBerry Scriptures Application getting started"
  • Categories should follow this convention as well
  • Spell "BlackBerry" correctly everywhere
  • Fix the Mormon Channel BlackBerry detail articles to remove the dash from the title.

Thoughts? -- Aebrown 21:28, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

There have been no responses to my question and proposal yet. However, it seems that standardizing names is now even more important, since there seems to be a shift to calling these projects "Mobile Gospel Library". The Android Scriptures Application has recently been modified to internally call itself "Gospel Library for Android", which is yet another naming style. Let's decide what these pages will be called and rename the pages and categories consistently.
Here is my updated proposal:
  • Main article titles: "Gospel Library for <platform>". This matches the new name mentioned in Android Scriptures Application, and it is simple. An argument could be made for including the word "Mobile" (as in Mobile Gospel Library Project), but these titles are already a mouthful, particularly when we get into detail pages. This doesn't exactly match the Mormon Channel convention, but it's close and more concise.
  • Detail article titles: follow MOS in not capitalizing words that are not proper nouns. So a sample detail page title would be "Gospel Library for BlackBerry getting started"
  • Categories should follow this convention as well (remove the Category:Scriptures Application)
  • Spell "BlackBerry" correctly everywhere
  • Fix the Mormon Channel BlackBerry detail articles to remove the dash from the title.
I don't have any particularly strong opinions about the particular proposal, but we really need to be consistent, and this is a good time to make the change. If no one offers any contrasting proposals, I'll just implement the above. -- Aebrown 18:25, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
