Audio backup equipment is generally available in LDS meetinghouses for use when either the Internet Stream or Satellite Broadcast methods fail. Additionally, due to the limits of the standard broadcast methods, depending on your location some language broadcasts are only available through the phone line via Audio backup Methods. The majority of the equipment listed here is provided by the local FM group, though some items (such as the EJ-R) are not.

General broadcast procedures

Generally, for all broadcasts originating from Church headquarters, all languages are available over the phone line. When you call to get connected to the audio broadcast, one of two things will happen:

  • You will be patched directly into your requested language feed

OR

  • The operator will ask you for a number that they can call you back on.

For most international calls, it is cheaper for the operator to call you back with the audio feed.

Requirements

  • Microphone cord
  • Non-toll restricted phone line
  • Phone (corded – wireless, and Dial-in handset type phones will not work)
  • Phone cord
  • Either a TTAIB, or the EJ-10.
  • Available Mic, or Line input into the chapel sound system
  • Mixer (optional)

Receive a broadcast using the TTAIB

  1. Locate the box. It is a 4”-square box; inside are the TTAIB, a Universal Power Supply, phone cable and audio patch cables.
  2. Find a Working Phone that is connected to a non-toll restricted phone line in the building; these are generally located in bishop’s and clerk offices, and sometimes in the satellite, and audio equipment racks.
    • The phone must be a standard style, without the dial in the handset.

  3. Take the TTAIB from the box, and set it on the counter near the phone
  4. Unplug the cable from the handset, and plug it into the top connector on the TTAIB
  5. Take the Coiled Phone cord form the TTAIB Box, plug one end into the Bottom connector of the TTAIB, and the other end into the handset. (Note, instead of using a standard telephone unit, you may also connect the to a cell phone using the included cable.)
  6. There are two(2) ways to connect to the sound system:
    • Connect the TTAIB microphone output port to a mic input on the sound system in the chapel, OR
    • Connect the Line output of the TTAIB to the Line input of the chapel sound system. Note that not all chapel sound systems have a Line input, but if they do, it is usually on the left side of the pulpit.
  7. After connecting to the sound system, plug in the power to the TTAIB.
  8. To connect to the audio feed, call the appropriate location.
    • For local backups (stake conference), call the phone number set up for the occasion.
    • For Headquarters events (general or regional broadcasts), call the Help Desk @ 801-240-3454 Opt 2; the Help Desk will transfer you to the appropriate audio backup language bridge.
  9. After connecting, set the handset down, but not on the cradle, as this will disconnect the call.

NOTE: It is possible to receive multiple language audio backups in a single building, but each will need its own phone line, TTAIB, and separate sound system. Depending on the age of your system, there are usually independent systems in the Children’s (Primary) and Relief Society Rooms.

Receive a broadcast using the EJ-10

  1. Locate the EJ-10; the EJ-10 is a vinyl zippered gray case. Inside the case are the EJ-10, and adapter cables secured to the EJ-10 box.
  2. Locate Working phone that is connected to a non-toll restricted phone line in the building; these are generally located in bishop’s and clerk offices, and sometimes in the satellite, and Audio equipment racks.
  3. Disconnect the telephone cable from the telephone base.
  4. Connect the telephone cable to the EJ-10’s "To Telephone Line" port to the telephone line.
  5. Using the telephone cable attached to the EJ-10, connect the "To Telephone Set" port to the telephone set.
  6. Connect the “microphone output cable” to any of the sound system inputs.
  7. To connect to the audio, call the appropriate location.
    • For local backups (stake conference), call the phone number set up for the occasion.
    • For Headquarters events (general or regional broadcasts), call the Help Desk @ 801-240-3454 Opt 2; the Help Desk will transfer you to the appropriate audio backup Language Bridge.
  8. After connecting, switch the "Telephone Switch ON-OFF" to on; this will seize the line, and you may now hang up the phone. Note that this only applies to the EJ-10. No other methods allow you to hang up the phone!
  9. Using the volume knob on the EJ-10, you may adjust your receive volume level.

NOTE: It is possible to receive multiple language audio backups in a single building, but each will need its own phone line, TTAIB, and separate sound system. Depending on the age of your system, there are usually independent systems in the Children’s (Primary) and Relief Society Rooms.

Transmit a broadcast using the EJ-10

AudioBackup2.jpg
  6. Connect a sound system audio output to one of the EJ-10's auxiliary inputs. Audio may be output from:
    • The Line level output from the chapel sound system - This is generally located on the stage left side of the pulpit, under the sacrament table, or the clerk's desk.
    • If you wish to have more control of the sound levels you are transmitting, you can connect the sound system to the EJ-10 through small mixing consoles. A small mixer and cabling kit can be purchased from Poll Sound (the cabling kit includes the EJ-R);
    • A hard of Hearing receiver
    • An Audio output jack on the front of the satelite rack.
  7. Wait for the connecting building to call you.
  8. After connecting, switch the "Telephone Switch ON-OFF" to on; this will seize the line, and you may now hang up the phone. Note that this only applies to the EJ-10. No other methods allow you to hang up the phone!

Transmit a broadcast using the EJ-R

AudioBackup3.jpg
  1. Locate the box. It is a white 4x2x3; inside is the EJ-R.
  2. Locate a non-toll restricted phone line in the building; these are generally located in bishop’s and clerk Offices, and in the satellite equipment rack.
  3. Connect the phone base to the phone jack.
  4. Disconnect the phone handset from the phone’s base station.
  5. Using the cord from the phone, connect the base station’s handset port to the base station port on the EJ-R.
  6. Locate another phone cord, and using it, connect the handset to the EJ-R’s handset port.
  7. Connect the sound system to the EJ-R.
    • If you wish to have more control of the sound levels you are transmitting, you can connect the sound system to the EJ-R through small mixing consoles. A small mixer and cabling kit can be purchased from Poll Sound (the cabling kit includes the EJ-R); OR
    • Locate the appropriate adapter cable for your sound system; this will be either a RCA to ¼" mono phone, or a mono 3.5mm Mini to ¼" Phone; OR
    • Locate the EJ-8 (crab box), and use it to adapt from the sound system output to the EJ-R.
  8. After connecting to the sound system, plug in the power to the EJ-R.
  9. Hang up the handset, and wait for the receiving end to call you.
  10. After connecting, set the handset down, but not on the cradle, as this will disconnect the call.
