Extensions

#1

Post by Thomas_Lerman »

I have requested the following extension to be installed:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Parser_functions
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:ParserFunctions
Specifically, I would like to use the #if and #ifeq in the template that I will use for the alphabetic table of contents (TOC) that I will replace in the following pages:
  1. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Browse_by_Country - I am currently not using the template and problems occur if you edit the main page.
  2. https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Tradit ... _Wiki_List - This page does not have an alphabetic listing yet, but this it would be very helpful. Since this page already has a TOC, I feel like it would work best to have the actual nicknames on another page with the alpha TOC. Any comments on this?
  3. Anyone know of other pages that has a fairly long alphabetic listing? I personally do not feel like the States list in the USA portal is too long especially being in the table.
I have noticed that "The Earl" requested #FOREACH to be installed:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LoopFunctions
I do not know necessarily know where he is planning on using this, but I can see that it would be useful. I found the request on the Wiki at (and linked it to here):
https://wiki.familysearch.org/en/Family ... ck#foreach

Bruce Bolingbroke brought up the following that they may also check out:
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ExpandTemplates

I am also curious, for the future:
  • What is the policy and proceedure may be for getting extensions installed?
  • Does anyone know of an easier way to get templates brought over from MediaWiki, Wikipedia, or anywhere else? So far, I have only seen edit/view on another site, copy, and then paste onto our site. Next, fnd out what template(s) are referred to that we do not have and repeat the process all over again.

As you saw on my #foreach request, currently this is the place to ask for such things.

I second the request for the parser functions, I assumed they already existed, but apparently not.

I have only used the edit/copy way to get templates over. I wonder how much of the templateing for Wikipedia is considered wiki content, and how much is considered wikimedia code. It would be nice to have a large chunk of the templates from there brought over.

Poll

It has been requested that we place a poll here to vote for extensions. I cannot add a poll, so if a nice admin would like to do so, I would appreciate it.

I had found some interesting translation template work on a user's page in Wikipedia. He was using #foreach to parse lists of language codes to auto-generate translation pages. I will have to find the pages again, as I didn't bookmark them. :(

The use of lists and #foreach was VERY elegant to build page frameworks. I would like to use #foreach to build out the articles and portals described at Talk:Meta:US_Structure.

Don't let #foreach derail the requests for the other parser functions, I will have to find the pages and defend #foreach once I have a chance. I just figured you would be interested, since you are discussing long lists of things.

Thanks

I did not see where to add polls either. My understanding is that at least my request has been added to the "to do" list. I do not know about the others nor how long it will take to make it to the top.

Thank you for describing what you are requesting #foreach to be used for. I think it will help the request process. I agree that it sounds very useful.

I would have to take a closer look at it to see if it would be useful for what I was talking about. In my cases, everything is alphabetized by hand when someone enters something new. It definitely is pretty easy to edit just, for example, the 'T' section.

Sorry, another thing that I feel like should be discussed in relation to Extensions (and Templates) is the need to have the documentation and categories set. This would allow others to know what exists, get help, etc.

Q: Would you like to see the Parser functions and / or #foreach installed on the wiki?

Parser Functions: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:ParserFunctions
#foreach: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LoopFunctions

1. Both
2. Parser Functions
3. #foreach
4. Neither
5. Don't care
