Signing you out when searching scriptures

#1

Post by appetersenfam »

Why am I signed out whenever I go BACK to search another scripture reference in my lds account? For instance, as I'm reading in one location - then I go back to find another scripture in a different book of the Book of Mormon. When I go to mark it, it kicks out my sign in and I have to do it all over again. I'm trying to study the online CES manual for the Book of Mormon, and each time I try to toggle back to another scripture (in the same window) I have to sign in again.

Once you are signed in to LDS.org, you need to make sure that everything you do uses HTTPS (the addresses you see in your browser's address bar will all start with "https://"; if you ever use HTTP to access LDS.org, you'll be signed out. The use of HTTP could come from many different sources: using a bookmark with a link that starts with "http://", following a link from some other site, following a link from another tab that is viewing an LDS.org page using HTTP, or typing an address in the browser's address bar.

In your particular situation, is it possible that you started with HTTP, then signed in (which would switch you to HTTPS), and so when you go back, you are going back to an HTTP page (which would sign you out)?

That is the case - https is always showing when I begin a search. The problem happens when I want to access another verse in a different chapter. It doesn't matter if I go to the left sidebar (under 'scriptures') or in the large grey heading. When I click anywhere it then signs me out. I'm using mac osx - can't imagine this would have anything to do with it though. When I go to a link in the online CES manual, it takes me to lds.org/scriptures in an entirely different window. Then I go to search for it in the (other) window I'm already signed into, and that's when it signs me out.

I'm not sure what you mean by "online CES manual," but I wonder if that manual has links to LDS.org that use HTTP.

The CES online manual I'm using is here: http://www.ldsces.org/inst_manuals/bm-i ... lindex.asp

It's helpful because links to each scripture used are enabled. It takes you to lds.org/scriptures (without the HTTPS) However, when I to to a scripture link, somehow it signs me out of my lds account when I attempt to mark it or add notes - even if it's in another window. I guess it detects it on my browser (Safari)

I suppose the workaround is to just manually find that scripture in the window I have open where I'm signed into my lds account. Since it's an lds ces link, (not lds.org) that must be why they aren't working together. Thanks for your input!

Thanks for supplying the link to the manual. That certainly makes it clear that it is that manual (and any others like it) that has links to the scriptures using HTTP. That's clearly the cause of the unexpected signing out.

Yes, the session information that determines if you are logged in is stored on a browser basis, not a tab or window of that browser.

You could also hover over a link you want to follow, then do a right click (or if you are on a Mac, ctrl+click) and choose the option like "Copy link location" (exact wording varies by browser). Then you can paste that link into your browser's address bar (probably in a separate tab/window) and change it to https before you go to the linked page.

It's not really the fact that the manual is stored on http://www.ldsces.org; it's the fact that the PDF file you are viewing has links to pages on LDS.org without using HTTP. The same thing would happen if that PDF file were on LDS.org.

Thanks for that info. Helps me understand what is going on. I'm sure there is a security reason for why you can't jump back and forth. Appreciate your explanation!
