Record marriage

#1

Post by calvinhunt »

Having been a ward clerk for nearly two years I have joined young couples married by the bishop to one household with the husband as head. In each case neither had been married before. Last week a sister in our ward who's husband had died was married by the bishop to a brother in our ward who's wife had died. Both couples are active and had been previously married to their original spouses in the temple. When I tried to create a new household with the husband as head I was surprised that I was unable to do it. I went to the members record and clicked on Spouse. Each record showed the original temple marriage of each with the particular info and each also showed, Deceased. However I saw no way to add a new spouse to either. Help would be appreciated.

You never mentioned the step of creating a marriage; that's what sets the spouse properly on the membership record.

You should first use the option to Record Civil Marriage (under Membership > Record Ordinances). That will set the "current spouse" for each of them to be correct. Then when you add the woman to the man's household, she will be listed as the spouse.

That should work. I'm going to go to the church and give it a try right now. I wish I could say, Oh yes, now I remember. But I really don't remember doing that before (There's a lot of things I don't remember any more). Thanks for your help.
