Temple Recommend Bar Code

#1

Post by cradams »

I can't find another place to ask this question. How can someone gain access to the temple if his recommend hasn't been recorded. We had a young man get ordained as an elder on Thursday night. It wasn't entered into MLS until afternoon on Friday. He had a morning endowment scheduled on Saturday. MLS has yet to show the ordination and this is Sunday evening. The temple recommend could not be validated by the bar code because the site keeps showing "unable to do because he is still in the Aaronic Priesthood. He was allowed to enter the temple with a non valid recommend. Help me understand this.

Many steps are involved, including ward AND stake signatures to complete both the Elders ordination and recommend, and multiple steps on the computer as well. It can get "hung up" at any point. While Bishop and Stake Pres. may know the urgent schedule, the clerks need to be alerted as well.

The ward or the stake can enter the Elders ordination, but only if they have the information and authorized signatures, and are expecting to update it. Stake and ward Clerks may only be in the office one night a week, and maybe not even on a Sunday, so if they aren't expecting a Thursday or Friday night ordination to record, they may not check their "in box" for another week!
The stake (clerks or the presidency members themselves) can activate the recommend, but again, must have the appropriate signatures on the recommend (ward and stake,) and also be expecting to do it on a "non-standard" day.

Many phone calls would have been required to streamline the process and "compress" it into just a few days. In my experience, delays are generally a lack of communication between all involved. While the Bishop and stake president may know of the urgent schedule, they don't perform all the computer details. If someone on the stake level, either in the clerks office, or the High Councilor assigned to that ward, is alerted and oversees each step, it can all happen very smoothly.

This was probably done after a phone call to the stake president to assure the temple that this was only a paperwork issue and that the person in question was indeed worthy to enter the temple. While this particular situation may be a bit unique, similar issues with lost/forgotten/expired recommends happen regularly.

A recommend may be valid even though it has not been recorded. The Temple has ways to verify the validity of a recommend that does not scan as current at the recommend desk. As RussellHltn said, sometimes this involves speaking with the stake president, but more often than not, others become involved first.

In most ways, the temple can still function on those occasions where the internet or other computers are down.

Everything was done properly up to where MLS did not update his ordination to allow the temple site to be able to read the bar code. The stake president was not called.
