How to get non-member children to show up on class rolls

I understand that a member can have their children shown on their records for genealogical purposes, but how can we get them to show up on the Primary rolls?

For starters, you'd have to create a non-member record for them. Simply listing them on the parent's record is not enough.

If the name doesn't appear in the list of "individual records", then they're not in the ward. Even if they are listed on the parent's records.

There may still be difficulties in getting them into the class roles. I don't remember the details.

One challenge is that nonmember records don't have a birthdate, and thus no age. That means that MLS won't automatically assign such records to any classes, since age is a criterion for most classes. But you can manually add a nonmember to any class (or organization). You'll just have to remember each year to manually move them from one class to the next.

All that needs done is to create a member of record for them. They do not have to have a name and a blessing to do this. All that's needed is for the parents permission. Its easy to do go through the members record click on children and then add the children, the computer will take you through the steps. You will need the, full name, DOB, Sex, birth place, name of mother and father.

You are correct for children of members. There is a bit of confusion created by the OP's title and then the text of the post which actually address two different scenarios. If the OP really meant to say children of record without a membership record then your response is correct. But for nonmember children of nonmember parents only a nonmember (temporary) record can be created.

That could work if they are young enough. It can't be done for a child who is 8 or older.

Sorry for the confusion. I just got clarification from our membership clerk. The children are not members and only 1 of the parents is a member who has just moved into our ward. There have been no records created for these children. Also, 2 of the children are over the age of 8.

I think you have all the options listed in this thread, except for actual baptism, which hasn't yet been mentioned. But clearly that step would not be taken just to get children on the rolls!

So here's a summary:
  • For all of these options, you need permissions from the parents.
  • If the parents want the children to be baptized, and the children have that desire, they could become full-fledged members.
  • For children under 8, it's an option to create a Child of Record; that has the benefit of specifying an age, so that children will be assigned automatically to classes according to age and move from class to class at the end of each year.
  • For any of the children, it's an option to create a nonmember record. Such a record has no age, so you have to manually assign the children to classes, and move them manually at the end of each year.
