MLS 3.5 Authorizing Donations and Expenses

#1

Post by rchomskis »

Our little branch ran into serious issues with donations/expenses authorizations. The thing is that the branch presidency consists of one local member and one full-time missionary. The clerk in the branch is also a full-time missionary. The Missionaries are not members of the branch, and as such they had not been called and set apart into the leadership positions. Up until the MLS has been updated to vers. 3.5 we were not having issues with authorizations. Now, the newest version makes it mandatory for these leaders to be local members only? How can we solve this problem with the missionaries actually serving in leadership positions, on a temp basis though, and not being able to authorize donations/expenses? We need the problem to be solved ASAP. Thanks :)

I would think you'd need to create a Out of unit member record for each of the missionaries in MLS.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

The out-of-unit approach doesn't fully work, because it also calls for the missionary's ordination information, not only for the membership number. We can not add the ordination information, because the missionary doesn't know it, and the system only allows us to choose names of people who ordained him from our branch, but obviously, the person who ordained him is not a member of our unit. :)

I'm sure there's a way around that. I believe it provides the list as a convenience but allows you to type a name.

I would suggest calling Local Unit Support. If they can't find a way around it, they can look up the information needed to create a Out of Unit Member.

This in only a local temporary record, not a permanent church record so the ordination information doesn't have to be absolutely correct. Just enter an approximate ordination date. The ordained by information isn't required so just leave it blank. As long as the membership number is correct and the the missionary is listed as being ordained an Elder (even if the date isn't exactly correct) you should be able to enter them as a branch counselor so that they can authorize donations.
