Sep 12 letter for new AP/YW and Youth Sunday School Curriculum
I was just on the letters portal, and saw the letter
dated Sep 12th saying that there will be new Curriculum
for the Aaronic Priesthood, Young Women, and Youth
Sunday School in 2013.
Can someone "in the know" tell me if these new materials
are supposed to replace AP 2, and YW 2, or merely
supplement them ?
If they new ones are replacing them, I want to make sure the
other clerks in my Stake do not place orders for
obsolete manuals as part of their Annual Order(s).
Thanks

The 2013 curriculum materials found in Unit Materials in the online store (store.lds.org) and in the Sunday Curriculum 2013 PDF document indicate that Aaronic Priesthood Manuals: Manual 2 (34821) and Young Women Manual 2 (34824) are not new for 2013. What is new is Aaronic Priesthood Resource Guide 2013 and Young Women Resource Guide 2013. Sunday school for ages 12-13 will use The Presidents of the Church Teacher’s Manual (31382). Sunday school for ages 14-18 will use Doctrine and Covenants and Church History Gospel Doctrine Teacher’s Manual (35685); Doctrine and Covenants and Church History
Class Member Study Guide (35686); and Our Heritage (35448).
Class Member Study Guide (35686); and Our Heritage (35448).

The letter is clear that it will replace the material, but it appears, the approvals did not all get complete on-time. What is clear is that the new material will be available next year. Does that mean Dec 2012? Jan 2013? Q1 2013 - anybody's guess. I'd plan to have the manuals in place, setup for a typical change as stated in the curriculum guide, or the online store stuff, but anticipate a need to change early next year.
It is pretty clear, from the indications of General YM and YW leaders that the supplemental materials should be the focus of lessons these days, is the old manual even needed? Not sure I'd order any for next year, but that's just me.
It is also pretty clear that SS, YM, YW will all need/want to have access to online media as these new lessons utilize them heavily, See the CES curriculum (like stated in the OCT letter) for the details on how that is used.

Gary,
The original post didn't make it explicitly clear, but it is referencing a letter sent from the 1st Presidency to Bishops and Stake Presidents about Curriculum changes for SS, YW, and YM for the year 2013. That letter is also archived online @ https://leader.lds.org under the Applications --> Official Communications Library (OCL) - in there you will see a letter dated September 12, 2012
Here is the official blurb

Here is the official blurb
Announces a new curriculum for Young Men and Young Women and for youth Sunday School classes. It will be available online in 23 languages, beginning in January 2013, and will replace the existing manuals.

John thanks for the blurb. Its to bad its a clear as mud on what to do. Its time to place the order this week in order to have it by next year and I hate to order something we won't be using.JohnShaw wrote:That letter is also archived online @ https://leader.lds.org under the Applications --> Official Communications Library (OCL) - in there you will see a letter dated September 12, 2012
Apparently my calling does not allow me into OCL as I don't have "Applications" as one of my options, under tools, after I log in. I did fine "Applications" in the leader resources but there was no OCL under that ether. Then I saw over to the right under the Communications heading "Application Notifications" but the number to the right was "zero" "0". So no luck.
I guess I get a hold of the ward clerk have him get it for me. Of course that mean having to teach him where it is, as I seem to be the most knowledgeable. My guess is he does not know there is such a file. Let alone how to get to it. But that's OK he's a good guy and easy to work with, pretty much lets me do what I need to do.

This is my opinion, as well. The letter from the First Presidency went to bishops and stake presidents and, as others have mentioned, is available in the Official Communications Library. Understanding that few have actual access to the OCL, my recommendation is that you get with your bishop or your clerk and read the letter.
Having read the letter, I would not order any new Sunday YM, YW, or youth SS manuals. Whether or not you should order the 2013 YM and YW Resource Guides, I do not know. I believe your priesthood leaders will be able to make a good decision in that matter.
Of course, you should already have all of the existing manuals anyway (that apparently will no longer be used) and not need to replace anything, unless it was folded, spindled, or whatever, as they used to say.
It is my personal opinion that the LDS Store site was set up based on the current youth curriculum and that they have not yet had time to adjust to the letter from the First Presidency announcing the new curriculum.

According to the Curriculum guide the Resource Guides were only going to be available online anyway so that really isn't an issue.

He can access it for you at letters.lds.org, and it will also eventually show up in the bishop's mailbox. Judging by the speed of other letters I see from my bishop, it will be about 2 or 3 weeks before it arrives.
