Missing resources for Ward Email broadcast capability?

#1

Post by sjhovey »

Page 13 of the LDS.org Newletter How-to Guide (version 1.0) states:
"Send an E-mail to Your Ward or Stake
(Leader Resources or Clerk Resources
Method)
1. From LDS.org, click Sign in, and then click the Sign In button and
sign in with your LDS Account.
2. Once signed in, if you are a priesthood leader or clerk, you will
see additional options. Click Leader Resources or Clerk
Resources.
3. Click Send a Message.
4. Select the ward or stake you want to send the message to. Ward
leaders and clerks can send messages to the ward; stake leaders
and clerks can send messages to the stake."

I cannot find any such resource. I am a Clerk. Is my account not set correctly? The direct method does not work for me using Chrome, Firefox or IE9.

Those instructions seem a bit vague. Specifically, you should:
  1. Go to LDS.org
  2. Click the Sign In/Tools link at the top.
  3. A list will drop down with a "Sign In" button at the top, followed by 7 more options
  4. Sign In
  5. The Sign In/Tools link changes to "Your Name/Tools"
  6. If you click on that link, the dropdown will have those 7 options, a dashed line, some options specific to your calling, a dashed line, and a "Sign Out" option.
That last list of "options specific to your calling" is where you will see (among others) "Leader Resources" and "Clerk Resources" if you indeed have the correct standard calling of Ward Clerk (or Ward Assistant Clerk).

Note that if you are an assistant ward clerk, but you are specifically "Ward Assistant Clerk-Finance" you will have no special access to leader or clerk resources on LDS.org.

Understood. One last question.

I completely understand your answer. One last question: will the use of the Newsletter tool require an Assistant Ward Clerk position of some kind to access the email broadcast capability? Or is there some other calling associated with the use of the Newsletter tool? My reason for asking is that I wear two hats - I am (or was) the Ward Webmaster (which admittedly is 'going away' soon).

There is currently no email capability built into the Newsletter, but when there is, I think it's very likely that it will only require the regular Newsletter administrator rights in order to access it. Right now, the only true broadcast capability is in the Send a Message feature of Leader and Clerk Resources, which requires at least a clerk calling; and with the Send a Message feature, the broadest distribution options are restricted to the bishop and ward clerk, and the stake president and stake clerk.

The calling of ward "Website Administrator" is not going away -- where did you hear that? Or are you confusing that standard calling with the assignment of being an administrator for the Classic Ward and Stake Websites (which are indeed going away soon).

The good news for you is that if you are given the standard calling of Website Administrator, you will be a default administrator for Newsletter (and for most of the other LDS.org tools).

You are correct on the last point - I was making my assumption based on the Classic Ward and Stake Websites. I must not be set up as a Website Administrator in the system because, although I am 'told' I have the calling, I do not seem to have access to the tools. I will check with our Bishopric and, if necessary, our Stake Executive Secretary (who has been handling the Directory, Calendar and other LDS.org tool issues at our Stake level) regarding my access.

Thanks for the information. I'll work through this locally at this point. We all still have a lot of learning to do.

The important thing is that you have the standard calling of "Website Administrator" in your ward's MLS. Any of the clerks or a bishopric member can help you with that. The stake executive secretary won't be any help, since this has to be done in ward MLS. Once the standard calling has been entered in MLS and transmitted, it takes 24-48 hours for you to have access rights based on that calling.

The Standard calling "Website Administrator" was recently added in the last couple of months so make sure you are in a standard calling and not a custom calling.

That standard calling of "Website Administrator" has existed for at least three years (a September 2009 version of Standard Ward Callings.pdf includes it). But it's definitely good to check and make sure it's a standard calling (that's why I bolded the word standard in my previous post).

Back to the email question:

Go to the Directory.
Choose Ward Organizations --> Adults.

On the pane at right, at the top, you'll see Email All Adults. Click on it and you'll send an email from your local email program.
