Maps on mobile device is painful!

I use lds.maps.org very frequently. Especially during the summer when I'm traveling around with the family. Older versions of the site used to work great, but the new version is terrible on a mobile device. In fact, I daresay it's nearly useless.

My device is an android. I tried with both the chrome browser as well as the standard browser. Most of the problem comes from searching and trying to navigate the map. The best way I can describe the problem is to say that the map is hyper sensitive to touch, make is hard to view search results.

I'm willing to make a mobile app to replace the poor experience related to the mobile site. Is there an api I can use? What's the policy on this?
