why does password expire every month or so?

Church Account is the primary user account (user name and password) for accessing online Church resources. Church Account was formerly known as LDS Account. This forum is a space to discuss all things related to Church Accounts (registration, account recovery, user experience, vulnerabilities, etc.).

A member of our ward keeps getting emails from ldsaccount that his password is going to expire in two weeks. He changed it fairly recently (because of the email) but he's getting the email again. This has been an ongoing problem for many months. He'll change the password then a month later get an email that it's going to expire.

Most people's LDS Account password never expires. The only exceptions that I know of are Church employees and certain missionaries who need access to some internal systems; those people have to change their passwords regularly. Typically it's only every 3 months, but policies may vary in different departments.

However, if that member is not a Church employee or one of those missionaries, then this sounds like a problem that the LDS Account support team would need to fix. You can contact them by going to LDS Account, clicking the Help link, and then clicking the "What if my issue is not listed here?" link.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

Just as a thought, I wonder if it's a password expiration issue, or if someone with a similar LDS Account name keeps trying to reset the password?
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

Ahhh, the light bulb just went off above my head. My wife and I have had to update our LDS Account passwords every six months for the past year or so. I thought it was happening to everyone!
I just learned by happenstance last week that as Welfare Services Missionaries we have Workforce IDs. So, by the explanation above, we are "certain missionaries" and are thus required to reset our passwords.

Your lightbulb set off my lightbulb. Aebrown was right. This member teaches the addiction recovery class and they have missionary name tags when they teach so perhaps that's a "certain missionary" too.

In addition to what has previously been mentioned, Seminary teachers using a new online grade reporting system (WISE) are having to change their LDS Account passwords every month. They are trying to change the system so that this will not be required, but for now, they have to change.

The WISE system is being tested in a few places and is not generally available, but this may affect anyone who teaches Seminary in an area where the test is being rolled out.
