Would unknown go for Windows Vista or is that under XP?

Though Tom you must have read my mind, I had a nagging to know what the stats were. :) I wonder if there could be a page that gave the stats. Just another thought.

Oh and cboyack, I've used Vista, XP, Linux, and Mac OS to view it. Could be that some that are Mac users just use the closest computer to access the fourm. Just don't dispair. :D

I recently reported a local units admin website bug that was applicable to Firefox but not Internet Explorer. In my e-mail exchange with a member of the MSR support staff, I was informed that, "the website is written to be compatible with Internet Explorer" and that "[they] are aware that other internet browsers do not work as well with the website." Furthermore, I was "[encouraged] to use IE while using the website." This was my response:
Thanks for the response, however, I will not be switching to Internet Explorer. Although I am a Windows user part-time (at work), though my default browser is Firefox, I am also a Linux user and have no desire to use Windows/IE for the sole purpose of administering our local unit website. I'm know that there are others in the church who choose non-Windows platforms such as Mac and Linux, and would urge the web development teams to support web standards so that user experience is not dependent on a single platform.
A summary of the browser statistics reveals:

Code: Select all

Description % usage % of known
-------------------------- ------- ----------
IE 51% 61%
Non-IE (excluding unknown) 33% 39%
-------------------------- ------- ----------
Total known browsers 84% 100%
==========================  =======  ==========
These number make is plain that a significant number of users do not choose IE as their default browser. Now of course, the browser statistics for the local units admin websites could be vastly different, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were more or less similar to these stats :)

Tom, could you comment on the Church's technology strategy as it concerns non-IE browsers?

Currently the Church tests against Firefox and IE for browsers on Windows and Mac. They don't officially support Linux but because Firefox should be supported, then you should not have a problem on most sites. The problem lies in the fact that when LUWS was written, firefox was not on the scene and so at that time the Church was supporting IE. When I'm at work tomorrow, I'll try to dig up the current standards. They do change, however. So to repeat, the problem is more of legacy code verse new code being written.

Just to clarify, I actually discovered the issue that prompted my comment using Windows. I'm a new Linux user and so far, have not found Firefox issues in Linux that don't also show on Windows; so I think support for Firefox is what is needed (meaning fixing the legacy code when issues are reported & verified ;)).

I think that is what is going to happen in LUWS 2.0. From what I have understood they are not modifying the old LUWS but they are designing a new global LUWS that will be compliant to the web standards. Thus to Firefox and IE and any other browser.... Safari too.

It's still on the drawing board. Work is being done to gather requirements, figure scope, etc. It will be a while.

Can these stats be refreshed? They are very interesting but I would like to see how things have changed.
