Membership record discrepancy

#1

Post by vsilcox »

I have requested a record for a teenage girl whose family moved into our ward. The family says she has been baptized. When I received the record it had the same name as the record I requested however it showed that this person was married and had a different last name. That is not correct. Also the birthdate on this record showed that the girl was born in 1967 and her father was born in 1969 which is obviously incorrect even though the father's name and birth date were the same as the father of the girl whose records I requested. I'm not sure how to handle this. I contacted the previous ward and they show that there was only a child of record for this person, but no individual record. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you've inhearted a mess.

That makes no sense to me. It's may be yet another case of someone who doesn't understand the difference between genealogy (showing the child on the parent's record) and a real "child of record". But if that was the case, you wouldn't have been able to get the record you have now.

Did the "prior unit" match what was expected? I'd like to eliminate the possibility that you've somehow gotten the record of someone else by the same name. (Stranger things have happened.)

On tough situations like this, I'd suggest calling local unit support. It's better to work this out with someone on the phone. CHQ has more information (such as the history of changes) then you can see on your side.

The critical issue is where is the baptism. I believe the handbook outlines the steps necessary if CHQ cannot retrieve a record of the baptism.

The previous ward showed the girl only listed as a child of the parents with no individual record. They also show no baptism record for this child. Thanks for the feedback.

Which suggest that either:
- There were mistaken and they did have her record.
- Her record was somewhere else
- You got someone else's record (which would explain the marriage, wrong birth date, etc.)

Because if there was never an individual record, then there would be nothing to send to you.

It also suggests that the baptism was never recorded in the membership, since that would have triggered the record to be created if it didn't exist before.

I'd also suggest a call to local unit support will sitting in front of MLS. If it is the right record, there are things wrong with it you cannot fix. If it is the wrong record, it needs to go back to where it was pulled from or where that member correctly resides.
I wouldn't email or send an MLS message because that would take much longer to resolve.
