Unboxing notes on the new Lenovo machines

A few observations I've made with the new model (YVVM)

Rubber feet on both the bottom and the left edge so you can place either vertically or horizontally.

No fan or other noise is discernible with the unit we received.

Comes with a gigabit ethernet card.

There does not appear to be a modem, possibly indicating that the presumption is that any unit to receive one of these units is on broadband.

These units DO have a serial port.

There are audio speakers inside the unit itself - you are no longer dependent on the monitor-mounted speakers. The audio quality isn't the best, but if all you are doing is normal clerk things in the office this shouldn't make much of a difference.

Our unit shipped with 4Gb of RAM and about a 450Gb HDD

DVD Multi recorder, R-DL

Two front-facing USB ports in addition to the ample collection of USB ports on the back. Also front-facing ports for mic in and headphones.

On the right edge there is a bar code label that incorporates both the model # and the S/N #: ours is in the format of 1S1997A39xxxxxxx with the x's representing the S/N

Came with a USB laser mouse w/scroll wheel that feels a bit on the cheap side.

Full-sized USB keyboard with an indentation at the top edge just the right size for a pen.

There is no BIOS prompt at boot.

Our FM group sent us a 19" monitor to replace the old Dell 15". We received a ViewSonic VG1932wm-LED that is significantly brighter than the old Dell and has speakers built in as well (as opposed to the old Dell monitor which had a separate speaker unit that snapped on below the monitor).

I noticed that as it was, out of the box, the monitor image was shifted about 1/4" to the left resulting in the left 1/2 of some characters to be cut off - a very subtle effect, many people might not even notice. This was fixed by pressing the 2nd button from the top on the right edge of the monitor, then the bottom button on the right edge of the monitor for automatic image adjust. The screen blanked for about 3 seconds then all was well.

On the last Dells we got, the modem was a USB "dongle" like thing. About as big as my thumb. Easy to overlook.

All Dell machines ship with the USB modem, but Lenovo machines don't. The modem for Lenovo machines is available in the catalog for FM managers to buy, but they have to add it manually. I'm going to update the equipment sheet they use and specifically list it so that they will be reminded to order it as needed.
