Lost IDs and passwords in MLS
The Bishop's Counsellors started up MLS tonight and all of the IDs and passwords are missing. They restarted the computer 4 times with the same results. MLS will not recognize any ID and password that is entered. Suggestions?

Follow the instructions on the wiki at Lost user names (MLS).jhorchemjr wrote:The Bishop's Counsellors started up MLS tonight and all of the IDs and passwords are missing. We continue to have this problem in our ward, even though we can correct it as per the instructions in the wiki, cited above in post #2. We have posted a bright yellow sign on the computer for users to carefully log out, then exit MLS, never using the red X of the dialog or shutting off the computer prematurely.
There are a number of auxiliary secretaries who have access to MLS (notably, those with a need to edit HT and VT routes and companionships). We have spoken with all of these individuals, but the log in problem rears its ugly head on a regular basis. Does MLS have a log file of some sort that we can use to troubleshoot the problem? We're looking for User ID or a log in time, or something that will give us a clue as to when the faulty exit is occurring. We want to train the user in a step-by step usage of how to log off properly.
With all that being said, why not just fix MLS so that it can be exited in only one way (the non-corrupting way) -- at least throwing up a message that warns users what might happen?

On a Win7 Machine it will be C:\ProgramData\LDS Church\MLS\data\mlslog.txtmtbaker wrote:We're looking for User ID or a log in time, or something that will give us a clue as to when the faulty exit is occurring. We want to train the user in a step-by step usage of how to log off properly.
Note that ProgramData is a hidden directory, but you can still get into if you type the name.
On a WinXP, I think it's C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\LDS Church\MLS\mlslog.txt
From my own experience, I think the problem wasn't so much shutting down MLS improperly, but powering off the computer prematurely. You may need to add to the instructions how to shutdown windows and the wait until the computer powers itself off before turning off the power strip. Failure to do that may not allow Windows to complete flushing the memory to disk.
