Calling all Spanish Speakers

OK, this is not exactly "development" help but we would like to engage with the community to help us translate text for various programs we are currently developing. So if you can help us translate, please review these text phrases that are currently on the Ward and Stake Clerk Web site and translate them by replying to this post with your translations. Please indicate next to your translation, which phrase it belongs to (1,2, or 3). This is a test to see how quickly and accurately we as a community can translate text. If this test goes well, we will create a more format process of getting the community involved with translation issues.

Please help translate into Spanish the following phrases.

First Phrase to Translate:
Name Change for Stake Technology Specialist Site

The resource that you have known as the Stake Technology Specialist Web site has been renamed "Clerk and Technology Support." The site will continue to provide the same helps as always, with the additional benefits of expanded content and greater interactivity to help clerks and technology specialists in their callings.

Second Phrase to Translate:
New Discussion Forum for Clerks and Stake Technology Specialists

Do you have a question about your calling as a clerk or stake technology specialist? See a new discussion forum on LDS Tech designed to help answer your questions, inform you of upcoming changes and new technology, and help magnify your calling.

Third Phrase to Translate:
Local Unit Web Site (LUWS) - Updating unit information

A unit needs to change its meetinghouse address, phone number, meeting time, or unit name on the LUWS.

Meetinghouse Address:
The building address as shown on the Web site is updated by the local facilities management (FM) group. If changes need to be made, units need to contact their local FM group.

Unit Phone Number:
The Church building phone number can be updated by a Web site administrator. Go to Administrator Options, and then click Maintain Home Page and then Phone. Update the phone number.

Meeting Times:
Meeting time changes for the Web site need to be made in MLS. Units must go to MLS, then System Options, then Unit, then Meeting Times. Note: When you are changing meeting times, the Date When Time Changes field must be populated with a future date (even if it is just one day in the future).

Unit Name:
The unit name is updated at Church headquarters. Once the name has been updated in CDOL (Church Directory of Organizations and Leaders), it will populate the Web site within 14 days

Silly question:

Are we starting a forum in Spanish? Otherwise, I think we need to change the verbiage to indicate the forum is in English.

General comment on translation:

The samples above contain specific church phrases. While I'm sure a competent translator can come up with an equivalent meaning, they need to be translated into the exact phrase the Spanish phrase used by the Church. The failure to properly use common expressions is what make bad translations so amusing. :) The ideal candidate for translation is someone who has been exposed to Church phrases in both languages.

I agree with RusselHltn that consistency of terminology is important. I don't have a copy of the Handbook of Instructions in Spanish to give the term for Stake Technology Specialist. Spanish translation (or any language translation for that matter) is a "complicated" issue since there are many ways to say the same thing and different words that mean different things in various Spanish-speaking countries. Nevertheless, a general translation can be made to suit the needs. This is my take on the first phrase...

Cambio del título para el sitio web del Especialista de Tecnología de la Estaca

El recurso conocido como "Sito web del Especialista de Tecnología de la Estaca" ha sido renombrado al "Ayuda para secretarios y especialistas de tecnología". El sitio continuará proveyendo las mismas ayudas como siempre, pero con beneficios adicionales de contenido añadido y otras actividades interactivas para ayudar a los secretarios y especialistas de tecnología en sus llamamientos.

Not sure if there is a standard translation at this point for LUWS, FM Group, or CDOL...

Hora de reuniones:
La hora de reuniones que se muestra por el sitio web se actualiza por medio de MLS (Servicios para Miembros y Líderes). Something that would help is if a phrase book could be made available to translate names, titles, positions, groups, etc between the different languages. Otherwise, I think the pool of people who are capable of translating and have first hand knowledge of the church phrases would be disappointingly small.

There are plenty to translate

#9

Post by kennard »

There are literally tens of thousands of people in the Church who speak both English and Spanish well enough to translate. Just in my own ward here at BYU, we have had several completely bilingual people (Hispanic or part-Hispanic), not to mention dozens of English speakers who have served Spanish-speaking missions. In addition to Spanish, we have (or have had) several who speak Mongolian, Japanese, Chinese (both Mandarin and Cantonese), Korean, German, Portuguese, French, Russian, and various other languages (many just because of missions, but quite a few have actually been native speakers from those countries). Some of those people already have volunteered to translate for the Church (mostly at the MTC, but I know of at least one who translated Mongolian for General Conference a couple years ago).

I don't think finding people who are capable of translating would be the problem, any more than the problem with doing indexing was finding people capable of reading names and typing them in. The problem is just showing people what they can do to help out and getting them to the site to do it. If there are problems with vocabulary or phrases, they would be more likely to occur with the technology-related terms than with Church phrases, but especially for a language like Spanish where so many Church members speak it, there are plenty of people who know the technology lingo in those languages. It's just a matter of whether or not they are the same few people who frequent the LDS Tech Forum.

While there is obviously (and rightfully so) a more rigorous process for translating things like scriptures, lesson manuals, and other doctrinally-sensitive materials, I think that it's definitely a great idea to get the community (maybe a larger community, not just those in this forum) involved in helping with translation for other less-important things like computer programs. Good luck!

I hope so. It seems like the obvious thing to do, given the number of Portuguese-speakers in the Church.

I'm not a native speaker, so please excuse the quality of the translation, but I think the following might be a little better:
