Purpose of Sunday School Rolls

Is it a requirement that wards keep weekly Sunday School attendance rolls?
If so, what for?

I guess you would have to say that Sunday School is not one of the "required attendance statistics" for the "required" quarterly report (see wiki) that a ward must submit to the church headquarters through MLS, and which the stake also receives once a ward submits it.

However, I believe it is within the scope of others to request it be tracked.
  • Your Ward's Sunday School president, or bishop, may require it.
  • Your Stake Sunday School president, or Stake President, may require it.
When I've seen additional reporting required, it is often a report compiled by the Sunday School secretary from rolls for youth classes, such as "Youth not attending any meeting this month." Such a report is collected and used by local leaders only, and is sometimes quite eye-opening to Youth leaders and parents....
