We received a new membership record which contains the head of the house, wife and 3 children (all are members) but only the head of household shows up under the "individual" and "household" membership records tab in MLS.
The wife and children do show up under the household head's individual membership record.
How do I get MLS to recognize all of the house members as, first, individual members in the ward and then see them listed in the "household" section?

It sounds like you've only received the record of the head of household. His marriage information and children are recorded in his record, but that doesn't automatically make them a household group. You need to request the rest of the family. (After making sure the family is in the ward and it's not a case of him being separated from the family for some reason.)
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.
