Cannot print church unit financial statements and work around. Other forms problems.

Hi,

When MLS was updated to 3.3 I couldn't open saved forms and some financial statements. Now with 3.3.1 I can open most of them, but some saved forms I still cannot open. I can now open my unit financial statements, but I cannot print them. I get an error that says,

"Exception javax.print. PrintException:java.awt.print. Printer Exception: Invalid name of Print Service."

I do notice however that when I click on the print icon the default printer service is different/wrong (it has my printer name with a PS added to the end) and the paper size is A4. If I change change everything to the correct paper size etc. then click print/OK, that is when I get the above error.

Work around: I printed the document to a PDF file using CutePDF. (I am not sure if that is something my stake tech guy put on there or not.) Then I open the PDF and it prints fine.

Everything else in MLS prints fine without having to mess with any settings.

I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but there you go.

We removed all other printers in windows then we were able to print. Setting a printer did not seem to help the problem, but removing all but the actual printer then rebooting did give us a workaround.

Have you tried to do a complete install of MLS using the the installer downloaded from mls.lds.org? Sometimes after patch updates are installed MLS may have problems that are corrected by doing a complete install. Do not uninstall anything; just install over top of your current installation of MLS using the installer. If you have not downloaded the MLS installer before you may need to contact your stake technology specialist (STS) before doing so since he is responsible for maintaining the systems. He will also have the site password if you do not already have it.

Try printing after doing the complete install of MLS as described above. If you still have print issues you can check the printer setup in Windows for anomalies. Uninstalling a printer in Windows and re-installing it may correct print issues. Just make sure you have the latest print dirver for your printer before installing the printer again. Also reboot you computer after installing the printer again. While this is normally not necessary for Windows itself, it may correct any registry errors for MLS.

Thanks! I will try to do a reinstall. Will the Church HQ servers still accept our ward's machine and talk after reinstalling?

I believe the advice was to do a "on top of" install. That will not cause send/receive problems. If you uninstall, then you may run into issues.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

I have two printers defined on my stake computer; one is the Church issued printer (not always connected) and one is a multi-function with fax. The latter is assigned in the OS as the default and is what is on the print dialog in all MLS functions except print statements. On that print dialog the other printer is selected by default. I learned what was going on after a few hung print jobs. Now I just use the pick list to select the default printer before hitting the Print button fpr a statement.

A unit clerk in my stake recently reported he could print everything in MLS except statements. I knew his problem, but since I installed their system I knew they only had one printer, so I was curious what was showing up as the selected printer in the print dialog for statements. I finally got to his computer yesterday and found the print dialog was selecting [printer] PS. In the OS printer list I found [printer] (default), [printer] PS, [printer](1), and [printer](2). As mentioned by KenRichins, removing the extra print drivers caused the defalt printer to be selected in the statement print dialog.

I sent an MLS message to Finance yesterday to report the issue. I suggested statement printing work the same as other areas in MLS and go with the default printer. The reply came back today that it is a known problem and it is on the list to be fixed.

I have a ward with an all-in-one printer which has 2 print drivers installed in their new Win 7 PC, one for print jobs and one for sending faxes. Everything works OK, except for the silly PDF print driver embedded in MLS (that we are all having a hard time with) used for printing the financial statements. In his case, no matter which of the two print drivers he selected from the pick-list, it always tried to send a fax. I tried myself and could only get the statements printed by using CutePDF, then Adobe to print the saved file, then deleting the file after (as was mentioned earlier in this thread).

Sure hope this gets fixed soon. I could probably disable the fax driver for the time being. With the default printer not being selected properly and the "A4" paper setting always coming up, I would certainly hope this is a priority for them to fix.
