Family History Centre Third Party Site Proxy configuration script.

#1

Post by carljokl »

I am looking into a problem at our Stake Family History Centre. There is a problem when trying to access some third party Genealogy websites to which the Church subscribes. There seems to be a configuration script which has been set up in the internet options of the computers. This looks like it converts the website address into a proxy address when specific third party Genealogy websites are accessed. It looks to me like the script is going wrong in our Family History Centre and this is resulting in the converted URL being malformed. I had a quick look at the script but did not see any glaring mistakes however I didn't examine it closely enough to be sure.

It looks like CGI is being used to generate the script or at least is involved in the process. I note that a file or url with the number of the family history centre and a .pac extension. Given that this implies a unique script per family history centre it might explain why only our family history centre is having problems.

I am already working with the Global Help Desk to resolve the problem but wondered if I knew more about the system in particular how to test the URL conversion is working properly or not it might help pinpoint the problem so that I can get it resolved faster with the Global Help Desk.

Given that a lot of prominent individuals who are involved with the systems seem to be involved with this forum perhaps someone who is involved with this system can tell me more.

I tend to doubt that GHD would be much help. There is a proxy script that should install proxy settings and do some other things so it will work. Depending on how locked down you have your computers, you may need to upgrade Patron to "Administrator" and re-run the PortalCfg program. Then you can return Patron to the normal settings.

Your best source of support would be to sign up with the LDSFHCTech list on Yahoo Groups.

This PortalCfg program, where is it located? I can get Administrator access to the computers and did have administrator access when I last tried to resolve the problem.

I must say that I did get the impression that the GHD were not really familiar with this system. I was the one who identified the script as the most likely cause of the problems from my own testing. I would prefer not to take another chunk of time out to arrange to meet up with the Stake FHC and deal with the GHD over the phone and the GHD not be in to fix the problem. It will waste both my time and the FHC's time. If I identify where the error lies, even if it is not something I can change myself it should speed things up once I am able to find out who administers the proxy script system.

It's on the portal page. Look down near the bottom, something about "help" or troubleshooting. Follow the links. Note that simply doing it as administrator may not do it. You may have to run it as Patron but with Admin rights.
