Request - Remove Classic LUWS Now (optional)

#1

Post by chadtew »

Is there a way to close out our Classic LUWS now without waiting for it to terminate. So many members go to the wrong site (favorites and bookmarks) even though we have announced the change.

I understand the new site doesn't have everything running just yet.

Is this option available???????

No, you cannot terminate the classic LUWS. But you can make it obvious on the home page, on the calendar, and on the directory what your unit's intentions are. For example you can add a message to the home page that states the LUWS calendar and LUWS directory are not being maintained and that users should use the new calendar and new directory. Also at the classic calendar you can remove all events and add one repeating event that essentially says to go to the new calendar. At the classic directory you can delete everyone from the callings listed making it practically useless.

That would work for the Leadership Directory. On the Membership Directory side, you could hide all the members.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

What would happen if all the "Registered Users" were disabled? I suspect that action would only effect the logon to the Classic site, but I'm not sure. Also, it wouldn't resolve the need to provide information as to where to go to view the new directory and calendar. But it would most certainly prevent anyone from using it.

Unfortunately that approach would also stop anyone from using the information that is on the Classic site that is still very useful, such as News and Information, Missionary, Lesson Schedules, etc. None of that exists on the new site yet. Only the directory and calendar on the Classic site cause confusion at this point, so I like the earlier suggestions better.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

steps to help make the switch

While you can't eliminate it, you can do the following, as others have suggested, but it's more than just announcing the change. We still use the website "news and information" and "lesson Schedules," but I don't think for a minute people will check both. What we do now:

1) Each Bulletin or newsletter, announce the change, giving the new website addresses. In the very near future, we will have a "hints and tips" section at the bottom of the announcements that will highlight a new feature on the new site like the calendar or the youth sites, etc.
2) Teach the Leaders how to use it, via leadership meetings. Cubs scouts, scouts and youth have calendaring needs. Show the YM, YW, Primary, and YSA and employment specialists that they have new web pages. In your emails, provide links back to the calendar or directory, as appropriate.
3) On the "classic" home page, explain which parts are active and which are not, and provide links to lds.org.
4) "blank out" your "classic" directory by deleting all the callings.
5) Put a daily recurring event on your calendar titled "visit new calendar - click here" and in the description type in "This calendar has been replaced and is no longer up-to-date. Visit our new calendar at https://lds.org/church-calendar/ and log-in with your LDS account."
6) Use it, Use it, Use it!
7) Our Bishopric suggested each home teacher carry a message about it to every home...I don't know if we will get around to doing that...

I've hidden all members, deleted all leadership, erased all calendar events, posted messages on the old homepage, printed reminders in the Sunday bulletin, we've made reminder announcements over the pulpit ... and I STILL get people posting events to the old calendar. :+)

I noticed you did not say that you created a recurring (repeating) event on the classic calendar that tells people to go to the new calendar. Have you done something similar to that? Having something on the calendar to redirect people is better than just a blank calendar.

This raises the question: How will the classic Ward/Stake sites be phased out when the time comes? Will they just disappear as soon as the new versions appear in the non-classic LDS.org site? Will there be a warning a few days/weeks before the old ones go away?

Last year we learned that the Ogden Temple will be closed for a major rebuilding effort. Many months later, when the official closing date was finally announced, we were told it would be business as usual until then. But after that date there's no turning back. Perhaps the closing of the classic site will be handled in a similar manner. (?)
