Connection Speed

#1

Post by Eric Werny-p40 »

Our current modem in our Ward computer is a 33.6k. With the installation of the new version, we have notice that are session times are a lot longer.
At times we have waited 20 minutes for data transfers.

Any recommendations.

Clerk are being forced to save transmissions with the exception of financial transaction, and wait for more
appropriate times to do a send/receive.

What is the Churches policy on an increase of bandwidth provisioning?

Where did the computer come from? Ours were all supplied when the church first switched over to providing them for MLS. They all have built-in 56K modems. However, depending on the phone line, it's possible that 33.6 is the best they can do.

I believe you are asking about upgrading your internet connection:
As far as I know only church approved buildings can receive broadband connections and currently those only include the Family History Centers (that includes some Stake Centers which house FHCs) in the USA. Awhile ago it in my old stake there was a request by the Stake President to church headquarters to be allowed to install a DSL line to a ward building but that was denied.

You can always ask your Stake President to make a request but I still believe it will be denied.

I do not work for the church nor do I have any say in the policies of the church and this post is from my personal experience only.

To the best of my knowledge one of the objectives of the LU Desktop 5.5 distribution is to prepare systems for broadband connections. I do know that my stake has all of the hardware for those connections already in place in our buildings. Our group of technically trained Asst. Stake Clerks, two electrical engineers and one software engineer (me), are working on getting the wiring, switches, and routers in place and turned on.

I also agree that was the push for the new MLS version (in Brazil while I was serving (2+ years ago) there ALL ward, stake, and mission buildings got broadband) was to allow for broadband.

Did your stake get church specific permission to set up the routers and everything? If so then great and I hope that soon all the building will be online.

After the tenth try to get into the dial up (MCIDAN) network to send out last weeks tithing receipts and expense checks... We received an update this morning to 2.6 which of course took forever over dial-up. After the 5.5 upgrade, our dial-up has been abysmal. Usually trying 3-5 times before the transmission will go. I have found that picking up the phone and holding the mute button during the transmission allows for the modem to retrain to a lower speed without dropping the connection. This usually works.

The peev here is that we have had HS Internet in our building for over a year now but no one knows the WEP or TKIP password on the 2 wireless AP's that are installed in the building for us to add a wireless NIC card to our machine! There are 2 wards in our building, FM Group HQ and FHC that are all using the HSI. FM also has Bi-Dir Sat connection for over 4 years.

Can our Brother from Arizona shed some light on when this will go live!!???

Thanks,

Bro Fedor - Wadsworth Ohio Ward - Akron Ohio Stake - Ward Clerk :(

Wouldn't do you any good even if you did know. You have to install a software client called Odyssey.

With the install of Desktop 5.5, it's permissible to connect to the existing network. The ward or stake will have to foot the bill for the hardware. Check with the Stake Technology Specialist. If he doesn't know what's to be done, have him call Global Support.

I've done that (i.e. called global support). They said "Stakes are not authorized to connect to ccn's at this time."

Funny. That's not what the email sent to all STS dated Feb 28, 2007 said.

It indicated the prerequisites for connection (Desktop 5.5 and an existing CCN), but did not mention any additional approval required.

I think a copy of the letter was sent to the stake MLS as well.

What were the steps indicated for the connection? And did it provide a key or did you have to call for the key? Of course someone might have installed the router and set up a key and then got released and never passed on the key and the church has no idea about it in the first place.
