Accessing the new MLS online

#1

Post by rolfejr »

I understand that your calling in MLS determines whether or not you can access MLS online. In my stake I am the Assistant Stake Executive Secretary. I'm also kind of the technical one, and the one my Stake Presidency (and the stake in general) turns to for advice and evaluation of church technology. I'd love to be able to use MLS online so I can train on it and let people know what they can do with it. However, I don't have access. Is there a way to request access, and is there a list of which callings are allowed to access it?

In the past I had my Stake President fill out a form to get me access to cdol.lds.org - I assume it would be a similar process, but I'm not sure where to get the form.

Take a look at the Leader Portal page on the Wiki. There is no form. It's all based on your callings in MLS. You must be listed with one of the standard callings listed on the Leader Portal wiki page. If your stake president thinks it appropriate you could be given the calling of Stake Assistant Clerk which should give you access.

Here are some other threads that talk about this. Please be aware that this is not an online version of MLS.
1) New online MLS feature request
2) Online MLS vs MLS
3) Online MLS
4) Online MLS #2

Assistant stake executive secretary is not a standard position in MLS. The current callings with access to the leader tools are the stake presidency, stake executive secretary, stake clerks and stake technology specialist. I am not sure whether the STS and assistant clerks have been added to the access list but that is the intention as mentioned by Church employees.

While some people have been calling the new.lds.org leader tools "online MLS" or "web MLS" it is not MLS in any manner and should not be referred to as such.

You are correct that it is not "online MLS", but it integrates tightly with online MLS. Currently "online MLS" only has view capabilities and even there it doesn't have everything the desktop version has. But it is being worked on and more features, including editing are being worked on. You will see it continue to expand.

Is that it's official name?

The problem is by calling it "online MLS" the default assumption is that it does have similar capability of the desktop application and it requires additional verbiage to reset everyone's expectations.

It would be nice if the terminology could be changed at least until it does have abilities in the same class as the desktop app.
Have you searched the Help Center? Try doing a Google search and adding "site:churchofjesuschrist.org/help" to the search criteria.

So we can better help you, please edit your Profile to include your general location.

Internally we call it MLS Web.

I understand, but this site will not get all the features at once, it will be an incremental approach, so when do you start to call online MLS? And what do you call it in the meantime? Online partial MLS? ;)

If there is a better name that conveys the fact that it is the beginnings of MLS online, then I would be happy to start using that.

Regardless of what it is called (Why not call it by its label, "Leader and Clerk Resources") I applaud all the work that has gone into this effort. From my home, I travel north to work about 40 miles and south to our chapel about five miles. The tools offered are fantastic! They have helped me have better visibility into the families I have responsibility for and more importantly, allowed me to better juggle the husband/father/son/Branch President balls I try to keep in the air.

I cannot adequately express my gratitude, for me personally this is one of the best things that have rolled out of Salt Lake City.

Now, if someone could get the Gospel Library to work on a BlackBerry Torch I wouldn't know what to do with myself!!

That's fine for internal use, but this is a public forum, so that is more confusing than helpful.

It seems to me to make perfect sense to use the terms that the features currently call themselves. The Tools menu uses the term "Leader and Clerk Resources"; the wiki article that describes this is titled Leader Portal (and it was written by a Church employee specifically tasked with documenting these features). I'm not sure why those two titles are not in sync, but at least they are close -- they both use the word "Leader".

I could see arguments for using "Leader and Clerk Resources" or "Leader Portal." Using any other term (especially one that contains "MLS") seems to be confusing and misleading.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.

Technically it is a separate application. The tools menu also has "Membership Records" and "Organizations & Callings". They share the sub menu. But that may be the best answer because that is what most people refer to.

I agree. I love what I can now do without having to be at the church computer (and it's only 5 minutes away for me).
