Numbering Updates to the CHI

#1

Post by atticusewig »

Looking at the Numbering scheme used by the CHI
got me to thinking - when letters come from CHQ
updating or clarifying policies to the Church Handbook,
will they be issued with a number ?

For example, let's say Book 2 has a section like:
29.2 Software permitted on Administrative Computers
is ammended by letter to include Boy Scout Tracking
software. Will the letter say 29.2.1 Exceptions for
Scout Progress Tracking Software?

It would seem like a great way to incorporate changes
to the CHI and still maintain some order. I've heard of
Bishopric who've unbound their CHI and put its pages
in a three-ring binder so when letters came in they could
hole-punch them and put them in the binder next the section
they affect. By numbering letters, it would make this practice
much easier to adopt. The online CHI could also be updated
when policy changes are made as well.

The numbering system reminds of the MIS days and I think
it will be an excellent way to refer to the CHI without violating
confidential material.

P.S. Is anyone going back to previous posts and wiki entries that
reference the CHI and updating the citations, or is it preferred
to leave them as they are ?

I doubt that anyone here knows the answer, but it would certainly be helpful in certain cases where it's a totally new policy; where it's a modification to an existing policy, it would seem to be better to just reference the relevant section number(s).

I would say that for forum posts, the answer should be no; forum posts should reflect information as of the date of the post. For the wiki, the answer should be yes, eventually; the wiki should reflect the best information available.
Questions that can benefit the larger community should be asked in a public forum, not a private message.
