I have noticed a variety of login and logout options on machines in the Stake.
One wants you to do "Control + Alt + Delete" to go any further, some simply come up with the pick an icon to login and other want you to enter the login name then password to login.
What method is most common on Church machines? I usually get the enter a login name then password option.
In the case of the "Control + Alt + Delete" option since the screen tells you to do this what use is it, since you can see how to make it the next step in loggin in.
When you log out typically you get a variety of options as well.
Most are: (with at dropdown menu to select)
Log Off, Shut Down, Restart
Some have:
Log Off, Shut Down, Restart, Stand By
One has:
Log Off, Shut Down, Restart, Hibernate (select by clicking icon)
They are all Win XP Professional Service Pack 3, so why all the different options and where do you set these preferences?
Thanks,

Control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or offlrawlins wrote:One wants you to do "Control + Alt + Delete" to go any further, some simply come up with the pick an icon to login and other want you to enter the login name then password to login.
If "Use the Welcome screen" is checked, you select from icons. If it's not checked, you get the classic login screen where you enter the user name.
I prefer classic as it add a layer of security. One would have to guess at the other logins available.
To set the option for "Control + Alt + Delete",
Control Panel > Administrator Options > Local Security Settings.
In the left side, navigate to
Security Settings > Local Policies > Security Options
On the right side, scroll down to
"Interactive logon: Do nor require CTRL + ALT + DEL"
Ctrl + Alt + Del is a key sequence that can not be intercepted by programming. Or at least normal programming. When you press Ctrl + Alt + Del, you know what comes next is from Windows and NOT from a program that impersonating a login screen in order to steal your login information.lrawlins wrote:In the case of the "Control + Alt + Delete" option since the screen tells you to do this what use is it, since you can see how to make it the next step in loggin in.

Stand By is a bit trickier. It appears that it is an option if Windows senses it can do it. It may require Advanced Power Management to be enabled in the BIOS, and devices drivers that support it. Personally I would not use it for a Church machine as you end up "crashing" if power is lost during standby.

The option to have the username blank at the logon screen can be found in the either the Group Policy applet or the Security Policy applet. The Local Policies > Security Options > Interactive logon: Do not display last user name is set to Enabled. Just as the classic loggon menu adds an additional security level, so does leaving the username blank for each logon.
